LORD BURGHLEY’S ADVICE
This was a time when members should not try to make party capital, but should try to find agreement between themselves, said Lord Burghley, the famous athlete, speaking in the House of Commons. When people judged a country like Germany they
should not take only the advice ot the elder people. In a large number of young people in Germany there had been created a type of idealism. There was idealism in this country, but unfortunately, except in emergencies, it was very often dormant. No system of government, democratic or dictatorship, ever stood still. The only reason we would ever have a dictatorship would be because the individuals of a democracy were not willing to face up to the responsibilities of democracy.
There was talk about moral rearma ment. There were too many people who were prepared to sit back and talk and criticise and not go out ana do a job of work themselves. The policy of abuse of othei systems of government got them nowhere. They should set an example, eliminate prejudice, and let people see how much better certain aspects of their system were. There was then some hope of getting other countries to evolve along their lines. They should be big
enough to be above a mud-slinging match when someone started to throw mud at them. There was need for b new spirit to spread throughout the land, a spirit of unselfish co-opera-tion and understanding and of national gratefulness for what they had managed to evolve in a system which, even yet, was not perfect.
