NEW ANCHOR LINE COASTER Speaking after the launching at Leith on October 25 of the motor vessel Purlri for the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., Ltd., of Nelson, Mr Henry Robb, junior, referred to the outlook In the shipbuilding Industry, and said that although ft was serious, his firm, while they had ships still on the stocks and others on the order book, would refuse to give way to defeatism and despair. The recent activity which some had been pleased to describe as a boom had not been so long-lived that memories of the previous depression were not still fresh In their minds. They had learned, or should have learned, much from those days that could be turned to good account In any difficult times that might lie ahead. The Purlri, built for the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company, Limited, Nelson (N.Z.), by Henry Robb, Limited, Is a twin-screw motor ship having a complete upper deck with combined poop and bridge deck, topgallant forecastle and boat deck, with the propelling machinery situated amidships. Her principal dimensions are: Length b.p., 186 ft; breadth moulded, 35ft; and depth moulded to shelter deck, 21ft, while she Is designed to carry 800 tons on a'mean draught of lift 6ln. There Is a large hold forward served by one hatch 48ft long, and a hold abaft the machinery space served by a hatch about 28ft long. Each of these hatches has patent rolling steel covers. Six three-ton electric-winches are fitted, each operating a steel derrick. The accommodation Is amidships, the crew being housed In the bridge ’tween decks; the officers and engineers in single-berth cabins on the bridge deck, while the master and chief officer are on the boat deck. The propelling machinery consists of twin British " Polar Diesel engines made by British Auxiliaries, Limited, under licence from A/B Atlas Diesel, Stockholm, and supplied by Atlas Diesel Company, Limited, London. Each engine has four cylinders which together provide sufficient power to give a mean speed when loaded of 10 knots.
