PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES
RECORD TOTAL IN OCTOBER A RISE IN EXPENDITURE More workmen were engaged in October on Undertakings directed by the Public Works Department than at any other time in the preceding two years. The total engaged was 23,851, an increase of 190 on the previous record in September. Of the 13,651 men employed on roads (including main highways), the Dunedin district, with a total of 1958, had the greatest number. The number employed on roads in the Christchurch district was 1120; in the Greymouth district. 1353: and in the Nelson district 845.
Hydro-electric works employees numbered 1283, 405 being employed in the Christchurch district.
Employees on other works, totalling 8915, were:— Land Improvement and drainage 1070 Irrigation 560 Public buildings 1827 Aerodromes 755 Railways 2713 Other works 1990
For the six months ended September, 1938, the expenditure from the Public Works 1 Fund proper, omitting subsidiary accounts, was_ £3,707.263, compared with £2,363,306 in the same period last year.
