BOAFORM ON EASY LIST

SAILING LADY HAS SETTLED DOWN CONFIDENCE IN SPANISH LAD (Special to Dailv Times) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 20. Dark Flight will probably make his next appearance at the Dunedin Cup meeting in February. The Nigger Minstrel two-year-old has ’been given a chance to freshen up after his racing during Cup Week. Sir Admiral has been schooling exceptionally well at Riverton and the Paladin gelding will not be without a chance in the hurdle races at Dunedin. He will be ridden by N. A. Kitto. who won the Great Western on Possum. Boaform has been troubled with shin soreness during the past week and as she has been given a brief let-up it is unlikely that she will be produced during the holidays. The Balboa mare will probably make her next appearance at the Wairio meeting. Poniard, who is now being trained at Riverton, is in good solid condition to begin a preparation. A jumping career is Intended for the Greyspear gelding and as he shaped well in the hunting field last season he is just the type to make a name for himself in this department. Sailing Lady has always proved a difficult mare to handle in her track work as she usually pulls very hard. In recent weeks, however, she appears to have settled down and has been galloping much more soberly. The Lord Warden mare has gone on the right way since Rodeur beat her in her last appearance and she promises to show up among the sprint fields next week. Through her pulling fault Sailing Lady failed over middle distances late last season, but if she continues to work as at present she may redeem her early promise as one likely to score over further than sprint distances. Two useful sprinters in Peony Rose and Rodeur have beep nominated for the Invercargill Cup, and their form will be followed with more than ordinary interest. Peony Rose was raced over a mile in her last start, and she put up rather a creditable showing in finishing second to Mona’s Song, She Is just the type to run out a good mile and a-quarter. Rodeur is rated the best sprinter in the province at the present time, and the manner in which she has carried big weights and finished on in her races points to her staying on. Ay a result of a good gallop with Milford and Ardchoille at Invercargill on Saturday morning, Mona’s Song is likely to come in for solid support in the Otago Handicap on the first day at Dunedin. At almost even weights she was doing her work as well as Milford at the end of a mile in Imin 48 3-ssec, and this trial left the impression that the Songbird mare will play a big part in the Dunedin race. In the Otago Handicap Milford is asked to concede Mona’s Song 251 b. and, fudged on track work, it may prove beyond him. Milford’s class is well disclosed, and through him an excellent line on Mona’s Song’s promise can be obtained. The Otago Handicap field will be the strongest that she has yet been opposed to, but that will not prevent her from showing up, as she rarely runs a bad race and is right at the top of her form. No secret is being made of the fact that Spanish Lad is expected to race prominently at Wingatui next week. In some quarters he is regarded as almost certain to win a race, as the Balboa gelding has improved greatly since he was narrowly beaten by Boswell last month. Before that race Spanish Lad had not done a great amount of work, and he will strip a much improved horse during the holidays. One of the reasons why Spanish Lad’s prospects are being so highly rated is that he has been working with Rodeur at Riverton, and has been doing his work as well as the Robespierre mare, who is doubtless the best sprinter in Southland at the present time. Rodeur. too, is engaged at Dunedin, and can also be expected to show up. Wild Career has not raced since last June, but during the last week or two he has made good progress in his work at headquarters. The Balboa gelding usually comes to hand quickly, and is likely to show up during the holidays. Last season he won the Otautau Cup in decisive style, and followed this up by annexing the Riverton Cup. Solidness has always been a feature of his efforts, and in his present form he should not experience much difficulty in continuing his successful run of last season. On a firm track he is always at his best.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

SUMMER MEETING The Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting, to be held at Wingatui next Monday and Tuesday, promises to be the most successful Christmas meeting held by the club for many years. The fields in all the events are good and in every race there will be three dividends on the place machine. A pleasing feature of the acceptances is the number of hurdlers and two-year-olds engaged. For years past these races have not been well patronised, but the policy of the club in continuing to cater for jumpers and two-year-olds has been justified. The grounds and gardens are now looking their best, and patrons to the popular Christmas meeting should be assured of an enjoyable two days’ racing. “A PROHIBITIVE PRICE” (United Press Association) (By Electric Teleeraoh Copyright) SYDNEY, Dec. 20 An American sportsman recently tried to buy Ajax, whose part owner Mr A. W. Thompson, on Monday sent a cablegram saying that Ajax was for sale “only at a prohibitive price.”
