FALSE PRETENCES
ACCUSED'S LONG RECORD SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT (Per United Pkess Association) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 19. With a list of 70 previous convictions of a similar nature, according to the police statement, John Anthony Crawford, a labourer, aged 50, faced 19 more charges in the Magistrate's Court to-day. He secured money from business people on the pretext that he was authorised to print passout checks for picture theatres and would include an advertisement on the back for the particular person approached. Inquiries showed that Crawford approached neither theatre managements nor printers. These circumstances applied to seven offences in Wellington, two in Auckland, two in Levin, and two in Palmerston North. The remaining six charges were in respect of money received as a canvasser for advertisements on calendars. He had collected £6 and paid the printer nothing. The magistrate, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., sent Crawford to gaol for three months on each of six charges, the sentences to be cumulative. Crawford was convicted and discharged on the remaining charges.
