WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised.

Mrs Tennet presided over the December meeting of the Waikouaiti Institute, held on Wednesday last. The roll call was " Sing or say an old-fashioned song," and the motto, "Frame your mind to mirth and merriment, which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life." The competitions resulted:— Christmas gift costing not more than 2s 6d: Mrs Simmons 1, Mrs Leckie 2. Darning: Mrs Leckie 1. Mrs Simmons 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Kerr, Steedman and Jones.

The Waiwera Institute met on Tuesday last. Mrs Swan presiding. The roll call was, "The most historical place I have visited, and why," and the motto was, "To Auld Lang Syne still give the 'God be with you,' but sing with joy: God bless the coming year." The competitions resulted: — Hairpin work: Mrs Anderson 1, Mrs Roxburgh 2. Christmas novelty, not to cost more than Is 6d: Mrs Wright 1. Mrs Roxburgh 2, Miss Dunn 3. Mrs Wright gave an interesting demonstration on " Chrystallising flowers." Miss Dunn rendered a vocal solo, and Mrs Roxburgh and Miss Gregan took part in a short dialogue. The hostesses were Mrs Stewart and Mrs Wilson.

The December meeting of the Macrae's-Moonlight Institute was presided over by Mrs Hay. The motto was, " Yesterday is gone—forget it; tomorrow never comes— why worry?'' the roll call was, "Uses of a lemon." The competition—Shoulder spray of natural flowers—resulted: Mrs Hay and Mrs Jenkens (equal) 1, Mrs Elsom and Mrs Heffernan (equal) 3. Mrs Ockwell was hostess.
