SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The Census is appointed to be taken to-day. . . . We understand that, in continuation of the recent exploration of the West Coast, the Surveyor, Mr Wright, as soon as the weather permits, is to go overland from the Wakatip to Martin's Bay, and a few hundred pounds are to be expended in making a passable track. Captain and Adjutant Anderson, at a meeting of Volunteers last evening, stated, in reply to a question, that he understood it to be Lieut-Col. Cargill's intention that the Encampment ehould not be early in January, but should be in March —the principal day being the 23rd, the anniversary of the settlement of Otago. THE HIGH SCHOOL. The Distribution of Prizes to the High School boys took place yesterday at the School; His Honor the Superintendent being the presenter of the prize in each case, the Rector (the Rev. F. C. Simmons) prefacing each presentation with some comment as to the work of the recipient or the Form to which he belonged. . SHIPPING SUMMARY. Since the departure of the mails via Panama, on the sth instant, there have been, exclusive of small coasters, 16 arrivals and 17 departures. The inward tonnage measured 4697 and the outward 3529 tons. The arrivals included the Robert Henderson, from Glasgow, on the 14th. with a full cargo and upwards of 90 passengers. The only other arrival of note was the barque Kate Waters, on the same day, from Port Albert, with a cargo of cattle and horses, which arrived in fine condition. . . . GOLD STATISTICS. The total exports of gold from the Province of Otago, from the time of the discovery of the Gold-fields until the end of the year 1866, amounted to 2,031,3740 z, the exports for the several years having been—
