MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held at Palmerston yesterday, the chairman (Cr J. O'Connell) presiding. There were also present Crs D. J. Ireland, A. Purvis, H. S. Sheat, G. Koss, W. Ritchie, W. Matheson and T. A. Peddie Correspondence The secretary of the Macraes Gold Mining Company, Ltd., applied for permission to sluice the Pound road at Macraes Flat. The company, he stated, would construct a temporary road in the meantime to the satisfaction of the council and would afterwards replace the old road in the present position.—The request was granted, the work to be supervised by the chairman and Cr Peddie. The Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs advised that the Minister agreed to the council's request to join the county and the Palmerston Borough Physical Welfare Committees together.—Noted. The postmaster, Palmerston, replying to an application by the council, wrote stating that pending an announcement of the Government's decision as to the future of the No. 13 scheme, it was not possible to authorise the employment of men under that authority beyond the end of the year.—Noted. The board's representative on the Nos. 16 and 17 District Highways Council wrote asking the co-opera-tion of the council in the proper conditioning and maintenance of main highways during the holiday season. He urged that bridge ends and signposts on bends should be painted white, and white line markings be clearly defined, and adequate warning notices be displayed where men and machines were at work on the roadsReceived. County Work The acting clerk (Mr W. B. Galloway) reported that, owing to the death of Mr A. McWilliam, no inspector's report had been prepared. A surfaceman's report was read and riding members gave verbal reports, work suggested being approved. Finance Accounts amounting to £958 19s 6d were passed for payment.
