PORTABLE WIRELESS USED FIRST TIME IN WORLD (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 19. Portable transmitting wireless sets are now being used for the first time in the world for geodetic triangulation work by field officers of the Lands and Survey Department. Triangulation survey is the basis of land, survey in the Dominion at present and geodetic triangulation takes into account the curvature of, the earth and will eventually replace numerous triangulation circuits now in use. , The work is carried out at night with small lights and, as most of the stations from which observations are made are high and remote from any means.of communication, observers are finding radio a tremendous assistance.,, Light keepers are equipped with re-' ceivers and, by this means, are given instructions as to the orientation of light and future movements. * The saving in time, as compared with the old method, is stated to be considerable. The wireless sets, which have a.range of about 150 miles; are being used by parties in the Marlborough, Nelson, and North Canterbury districts, and the results are regarded as very satisfactory.
