RHODES SCHOLARS
ACADEMIC DISTINCTIONS NEW ZEALANDKkS PROMINENT Names of New Zealanders figure prominently in the annual statement of the Rhodes Trust for the academic year, of 1937*38. The statement gives details of examination successes of Rhodes scholars and also records of other achievements of the scholars. Of 27 men who represented Oxford in sports against Cambridge, however, none wa£ from the (Dominion, Mr M. qualified for the B.Litt. degree in social studies, and Mr W. F. Monk was av/arded the Beit Senior Research Scholarship for research in colonial history. Distinctions won by New Zealanders who have held Rhodes Scholarships.were the receipt of the Order of the British Empire by Mr R. A, Farquharson (1906), who is director of the;Water supply development scheme for British Somaliland, the election to a Radcliffe. Travelling Fellowship in Medicine of Dr W.' E. Henley (1929), who is house physician to the medical unit of St. Mary's Hospital, London; the appointment as surgeon to his Majesty's Household of Dr A. E. Porritt (1923), who is assistant director of the surgical unit of St. Mary's Hospital. During the year the following proceeded to degrees for which they had qualified:—B.M.. Mr J. E. Lovelock; 8.C.L., Mr L. F. Moller; M.A., Mr J. E Lovelock: 8.A., Messrs E. P. Haslam and W F Monk. , Books published by New Zealand scholars during the* ytear» were:— "Crisis in China" and "North China Front," J. M. Bertram (1932); "Defence of Madrid," Geoffrey Cox (1932), who is chief Paris correspondent of the Daily Express.
