OBITUARY

MR W. S. W. AVERILL (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 19. Mr Wilfred Selwyn Weir Averill. of Hastings, third son of Archbishop Averill, Primate of New Zealand, and Mrs Averill, died this morning in a private hospital, aged 38. The deceased was one of the most popular figures in the legal profession in Hawke's Bay. He was born in England and was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch. He was & member of cricket and football teams. He married a daughter of Mr H. B. Lusk, Crown Prosecutor in Hawke's Bay. Mr Averill came to Auckland three weeks ago to enter, a private hospital, and was later discharged, but re-entered the hospital last week. He leaves a widow and two young daughters. His brothers are Canon Walter Averill (Auckland), Dr Leslie Averill (Christchurch). and Mr Lloyd Averill (now in England). His sister is Mrs L. E. Cartridge, of Auckland. The funeral will take place on Wednesday. MISS KIORE KING (Pee United Press association) HASTINGS, Dec. 19. The death oceurred yesterday of Miss Kiore King, after a long illness. She had gained, some distinction in dramatic circles in New Zealand, having toured England, Australia, and New Zealand with Maurice Moscovitch. Allan Wilkie, and other companies. More recently she was producer for the Christchurch Repertory Company, and had adjudicated at various drama festivals. PROFESSOR P. G. HORNELL (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 19. The Public Works Department has been advised of the death of Professor P. G. Hornell, who advised on the problems of the Arapuni seepage some years ago. MR EVAN PARRY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 19. News was received to-day of the death in England of Mr Evan Parry, M.1.E.E., who was known for his record of engineering service in many parts of the world. From 1911 to 1919. Mr Parry was chief electrical engineer to the New Zealand Government, and, during those years, he formulated the scheme from which the hydroelectrical system of New Zealand has been built. MR MICHAEL O'BRIEN The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Michael- O'Brien, who was a wellknown hotelkeeper at Otautau for many years. Born at Temuka in 1875, he took up farming at Greenvale and later settled in Southland, first at Wairio and then at Otautau. Before he entered the hotel business at Otautau he was engaged in contracting work at Five Rivers and Birchwood. He took ovei the licence of the Crown Hotel, Ctautau. in 1907, and held it until a few years ago, when he purchased Sunnyside station in the Monowai district. Mr O'Brien was one of the leading horse-racing personalities of Southland. He founded the Otautau Racing Club and was its president continuously up to the time of his death. He was a member of the committee of the Chfden Racing Club, the Birchwood Hunt Club, and the Wairio Jockey Club. He also was a member of the Otautau Athletic Socisty. He was chairman of the committee which successfully conducted the recent jubilee celebrations of the Riverton parish of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife and a family of two daughters and three sons—Sis'er Campion (Dunedin Convent) and Miss Nora O'Brien, and Messrs John O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, and Francis O'Brien, all of Sunnyside. MRS F. WILLIAMS The death occurred on December 17 of a resident of Timaru in the person of Mrs F. Williams, the widow of Mr Fred Williams, who was well known as a wool-classer and dredge manager in Central Otago for some 40 years. Mrs Williams was married in 1859 and resided in Alexandra until 1910, when she removed with her husband and family to Timaru. where she had lived ever since. Mrs Williams's death was directly due to a serious accident which occurred last June, and from the results of which she was forced to re- j main in the Timaru Hospital until the i time of her death. Mrs Williams was predeceased by her husband by some five years.
