DEFENCE OF FRANCE
THE NAVY ESTIMATES LARGE INCREASE RECORDED (Independent Cable Service) PARIS, Dec. 16. (Received Dec. 18, at 3 p.m.) The navy estimates for 1939 are £45,000,000, an increase of 57 per cent, compared with 1938. Extensive additions are planned to the coastal defences, naval bases and arsenals. Part of the increased expenditure is necessary to catch up time lost during the enforcement of the 40-hour week in the dockyards, which, it is estimated, set back the programme bv eight months. It is aimed to complete the construction of all the vessels on the stocks before January. 1943. The naval aircraft estimates have increased bv 19 per cent. The Chamber of Deputies, discussing the Budget, approved allocations to the War Ministry of 5,795,227,415 francs, to the Air Ministry of 2,674,772,567, and to the Naval Ministry of 2,321,648,649.
