SCHOOL VACATIONS

ARTHUR STREET The Arthur Street School break-up took the form of a series of entertainments by the pupils, a large attendance of parents and friends enjoying the programme of plays, recitations, and choruses. The infant classes, under Miss Elder, gave a short programme, and each pupil was presented with a book. Morning and afternoon functions were held for the lower and upper standards respectively. Mr J. McCrae, chairman of the School Committee, reviewing the past year, referred to the fine radio equipment recently installed in the school Certificates were presented by Mr McCrae to a large number of pupils for swimming proficiency. and to the winners of the lawn tennis Doubles Championship. The Chapman Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Paula F Rathbone. who also received the Atheneeum free-membership award for English and history, and the Dudley Brugb Scholarship to Alexander B. Cowie. Congratulations to Mr W. H. Collett on his appointment to a position on the staff of the King Edward Technical College were conveyed by Mr McCrae, who also spoke appreciatively of Mr Collett's service to the school for the past two years and a-half. CAPE SAUNDERS The closing ceremony of the Cape Saunders School took place last week, Mr David Smith presiding. The teacher. Mr J. J. O'Regan, was at the organ, and the children sang several songs. Primary school certificates were issued to all the Form II scholars— Pipiriki Karetai. Hedley Mayall, Peggy Smith, and Muriel Stuart. The prizes were distributed by the chairman those present under school age receiving a toy from the teacher. A vote of thanks to Mr O'Regan was carried with musical honours. A large nura her of parents and residents took the opportunity of inspecting the new building. The display of school work drew much favourable comment, and after a folk dancing display by senior children, afternoon tea was served bv the girls of the upper school. Nearly 200 people attended the concert on Thursday evening when the children were presented with gift books, which it was suggested mignl be returned on loan to the school in the New Year to augment the supply of reading material. GREEN ISLAND On Thursday afternoon the infant classes of the Green I?'and School had a break-up parly at the school, each child receiving a toy and a gifl book from the School Committee. In the evening the standard? held a concert and prize-giving ceremony in the Town Hall, Mr E. Peterson occupying the chair.
