FIRST GRADE MATCHES CARISBROOK A INCREASES LEAD J. A. DUNNING'S FAREWELL PERFORMANCE. Although overhead conditions were excellent for the continuation of the Otago Cricket Associations grade matches pn Saturday, wickets and out fields had. not recovered from the steady rains.of the week, and it was found possible to play only First Grade matches. Scoring generally was low, which was the natural result of such slow outfields, and in only one game was an outright win scored. inai went to Carisbrook. A at the expense of that club's B side, and the margin was an innings and 88 runs J. A. Dunning, Otago and New Zealand stock bowler, made a brave farewell to Dunedin He is leaving soon for Australia, and his figures for his last game were 14 wickets for 57 runslight for 34 and six for 23-and in addition he scored 54 in Carisbrook A s ° n Unive n rsity' won on the first innings against Kaikorai by 43 runs, but there was much interesting cricket on the second day, when Kaikorai was prevented from forcing a possible wi by the defensive tactics adopted by University. Allcotfs bowl mg-he: took six for 36—was mainly responsible for University's total of 81 in ite second innings. Albion won against Giangc by 76 runs on the first innings, and there was little of interest in the second day's play. Old Boys, too, scored a first-innings win beating Dunedin, by 23 runs Dunedin was on tne way to a good score in the second innings having 111 runs on the boardwithou loss, but Old Boys always had a livepoint win secure. . The positions of the teams in the championship competition at present are: Carisbrook A 24 points Oldl Boys 18, Dunedin 14, University 13, Albion 12 Kaikorai 10, Grange 6, Carisbrook B 3. , , , AN INTERESTING MATCH UNIVERSITY BEATS KAIKORAI Although University scored a win on the first' innings against Kaikorai bv 43 runs, there was a quite a lot oY interesting cricket on the .second day at Bishopscourt. University had finished the first day in.the strong position of having scored ,158 runs ana captured six Kaikorai wickets for 51 runs A vigorous knock by Cherry and Steady batting by Allcott and Rennick brought the total up to 115 and then the home side set about Siting rid of the University batsmen quickly., Uttley was out to the third ball of the innings, to a catch that rebounded off the •keeper's gloves to first slip, and thereafter the bowlers.held the upper hand The fielding was good, and, with aucott keeping a very steady length and varying his flight cleverly, none of the University batsmen was thoroughly comfortable. The side was all out for 61, Allcott getting six wickets and Rentiick coming on late and getting[three cheaply. The wicket was not difficult, end despite the fact that the outfield H was heavy, only Dunn, Lawson. and Toomev looked like staying long, Kaikorai began its second innings with an outsider's chance of saving the game, but that soon disappeared when University adopted purely defensive tactics. Thfcre were 65 minutes of play left, and 'Kaikorai. had to score 125 runs to win. but the University fieldsmeni were spread round the boundaries and the bowlers bowled wide of the "wicket. Begg was bowling so far out on the leg side that he . was out of reach. The batsmen hunted for runs, and McGregbr slashed wildly,-with the result that his 20 included: two .6 s. Talbot went along quietly, while other batsmen threw their wickets away, and the board showed 80 for five wickets at "stumps." University had concenr trated on ensuring, a first-innings win and given the Kaikorai batsmen no chance to save the game. Albion batted first and made 183, and when play was resumed on Saturday Grange had four wickets down for 48. Things did not go at all well for the batsmen, and when the last two men in the side, Frew and Lemin, became associated Grange J required seven runs to avoid the follow-on This was successfully accomplished, and the partnership which yielded a total of 30 runs, pro-' vided about the brightest cricket of the day, carrying the score to 107 before Lemin was out to a brilliant catch by Mitchell off Goding's bowling. Albion's second innings, which was not taken altogether seriously, was notable chiefly for the fact that Ditchfield. who scored 25. broke a, succession of four "ducks." Lemin played havoc among the batsmen in the latter stages of the innings. '.,, .

DUNEDIN INTERESTING FINISH TO MATCH High School Old Boys gained a win over Dunedin on the first innings, but there was an interesting finish to the match, when Dunedin, requiring 160 runs for an outright win, scored 111 without the loss of a wicket. Against Old Boys' 135 on the previous Saturday Dunedin had lost eight wickets for 92 at the conclusion of play and the team added only another 20 to its total. In their second innings Old Boys scored 142 for eight wickets declared, Payne (52) and McLeod (22) helping the side considerably in an excellent sixth wicket stand., Dunedin had slightly less than two hours to make 165 runs, and Robertson and O'Sullivan set about their task confidently, but time was against them, and the total was 111 when stumps were drawn. Robertson, who had taken eight wickets for 59 on the previous Saturday, batted really well for 64 not out, his total including five'4s and two 6's. O'Sullivan also batted freely for 40 not out. The wicket was soft to begin with, but was improving as the afternoon wore on. OLD BOYS

CARISBROOK A v. CARISBROOK B FINE BOWLING BY DUNNING The match between Carisbrook A and Carisbrook B was concluded at Carisbrook, the A team scoring an eight-point win. On the previous Saturday the A side had scored 213 runs, and the B team had lost five wickets for 41 runs. An hour's batting saw the remainder of the B team dismissed with only 28 runs added. Going in again at 2.35. the B side were once more dismissed for a small total, the last wicket falling at two minutes to 4 Included in Nicol's score was a 6 off Dunning. The B batsmen gave a disappointing display, and it looked as if.some of them were put before they were in. as the saying goes. The wicket suited Dunning, who bowled unchanged during both innings, and finished up with the splendid average of 14 wickets for 57 runs, or four runs a wicket.
