GETTING TO SCHOOL UNDER DIFFICULTIES Children from the Downs Settlement in the Lauder district of Central Otago, fording the Manuherikia River on their way to school at Becks. With the exception of an 11 mile detour, this is the only access 11 settlers have to the main road, and in the thaw season the crossing is a hazardous one.
