PENINSULA SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL EVENT FIELD DAY AT PORTOBELLO GOOD ALL-ROUND DISPLAY The pleasant picnic atmosphere of the summer show of the Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Society, enhanced on Saturday afternoon by warm sunshine and ideal conditions, is one of its greatest attractions, especially for visitors from the city. It is not a large show, even by country district standards, but local farmers always contrive to present a very fair showing of live stock representative of the farming pursuits followed on the Peninsula. This year's catalogue was one of the best the society has presented for several years, and the show may be accounted one of the most successful staged at Portobello to date. There was a large attendance, and at the conclusion of the afternoon's judging local and visiting horses and riders provided an interesting programme of ring events. The chief live stock sections were the horses. and the dairy cattle. The horse classes comprised mainly working draughts and hacks and hunters. A good useful type of farm draught was shown, and the section also included some attractive light spring carters. Mr Martin Geary won the stallion championship, and Mr G. Masters the award for mares. Among those who figured in the prize list were Messrs John Hellyer, W. Cowan A. C. Miles, J. Weir, T. McCutchebn, and W. Dunford. The light horse entries were good, and included a number of familiar show ring performers. Mr W. Hastie (Pine Hill) won the hack championship and the pony ribbon was won by Mr F. Ford. Mr Hastie also won the harness horse championship. Mr J. E. Brunton, Miss Noel Kerr, Miss Margaret Smaill, Miss F. Holmes and Messrs W. Hastie, J. S. McKay and K. Russell were the more prominent prize-winners. A good showing of dairy cattle was made up mostly of Ayrshires, Jerseys and Fnesians. In the Ayrshire section the chief exhibitors were Messrs J. Weir. T. Morris and Son and J. C. Aitken. Mr Weir showed the champion bull, a nice, typical sort, and Messrs Morris and Son won the championship for females with a very attractive animal. Messrs A. C. Miles. D. Hellyer and L. Hellyer figured prominently in the prize list in the Jersey section, Mr Miles winning the cow championship and Mr L. Hellyer the male championship. Mr A. C. Miles took most of the awards in the Friesian section, including two championship ribbons, with a small but good bunch of Black and Whites.

The home industries department of the show was a great success, the entries totalling 188. compared with only 69 last year. The display covered baking, fancy work, dairy produce, jams, preserves and vegetables. Not only was the section numerically strOpg, but the judges in all cases commented very favourably on the quality of the entries and the excellence of the handiwork. The showing made by Peninsula housewives was easily the best that has yet been seen at this show. The success of the show was also reflected to some extent in the large increase in the total entries. Last year the figure was 272. but this year the total was 434. PRIZE LIST The following is the prize list:— HORSES Draughts Judge: Mr J. Campbell (Momona) Entire, three years or over. One entry—G.
