VISIT BRITAIN CAMPAIGN
BIGGER GOVERNMENT GRANT (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Nov. 17. The Government are shortly to make a substantially bigger contribution than the £SOOO at present given annually to the Travel and Industrial Development Association of Great Britain and Ireland which deals with the advertising abroad of Britain as a holiday centre. This announcement was made at tne annual conference of the Residential Hotels' Association by Mr W. Frame, the vice-president, who represents the association on the Travel Association. The announcement followed an address by Mr W. Birtwistle, publicity officer to the Bournemouth Corporation on the "Britain for Holidays" campaign. The present grant of £SOOO was. he said, ridiculous in comparison with the several millions in income tax and other taxes which the National Exchequer took from the £30.000,000 spent annually by foreign visitors in this country. Foreign visitors to Britain had increased by 80 per cent., and it was reasonable to assume that if Britain was really heard among other countries which were competing for international tourist traffic the £30.000.000 might easily become £50,000,000 or more.
