BALCLUTHA Swimming Competition The weekly races were held at the Municipal Baths on Thursday night, with the exception of the junior event. Results were as follows:—100 Yards Freestyle: T. Wyber 1, Miss E. Dow 2. C. James 3. 50 Yards Freestyle: W. Stewart 1, S. Hamblett 2, VT. Dawson 3. Important Property Sale An important sale of Balclutha property was completed yesterday through the agency of Messrs Nimmo and Blair. Mr C. J. Wood's extensive shop property in Clyde street was sold to Mr James Wilson * (Red Band Taxis) at a satisfactory price. The property is centrally situated, and extends through from Clyde street to Charlotte street. It is the new proprietor's intention to demolish the present old wooden buildings and erect a large, modern garage in brick, with shops in front. Training College Entrants , Two ex-pupils of the Toko District ' High School are included amongst the additional admissions to the Dunedin Training College for next year—Miss Josephine Price and Miss Julie Flett. Miss Flett was previously teaching at the Manuka Creek School. Vblt of Australian Athletes The two visiting Australian athletes, E. Best. and G. Backhouse, who will make their first appearance in the Dominion at the Toko Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club's evening sports meeting next Wednesday, are to be tendered a civic reception. During the afternoon the visitors will deliver short talks on athletics to the school children and others interested. LAWRENCE Farewell Social A large gathering assembled in the Anglican Hall on Wednesday night to bid farewell to Mr George Weston, who Is leaving the district to serve a short term commission in the Royal Air Force. The Rev. James Simpson, who presided, extended congratulations to the guest of the evening and expressed the good wishes of those present for his success in his new career. Mr Weston was then presented with a substantial cheque from the local residents. Mr Weston suitably replied. The Rev, F. W. Winton presided at the annu'' Sunday school break-up and prize-giving ceremony held in the Presbyterian hall. The following were the recipients of diplomas:—First vear: Elisabeth Barr. Rita Barr. Lawn Tennis A special lawn tennis match between Lawrence and Miller's Flat at Miller's Flat resulted in the home team winning by 11 sets (106 games) to 5 sets (65 games). On Tuesday afternoon Lawrence District High School played its biannual match against TaDanui on the latter's ground. An enjoyable game resulted in a win for Tapanui by nine sets to five. St. Jatrick's School Concert A varied and attractive programme was providedfor patrons at the annual break-up concert of St. Patricks School. ■ ' The Rev. Father Scanlan, presenting » the prizes for the year, complimented the pupils and the Dominican Sisters on the hlflh standard of scholastic achievement and Christian doctrine, which had resulted in favourable reports from the inspecting officers. Following is the prize list:—Dux.of school, May Crowley; senior Christian doctrine, Mary Blackmore;-■ junior Christian doctrine, Maureen Murpney, good conduct, Agnes Murdock; Trinity College (intermediate), Jean Tunnah. Cricket ' Local cricket records were made on Saturday when the Lawrence eleven defeated South Otago High School by an innings and 14 runs. The High School was dismissed for the small total of 10 runs, six of these c©ming from byes. Only eight, overs were bowled. Hancock, the local bowler, secured the remarkable average of six - wickets for one run and Stuart three for four. ■ ALEXANDRA Rifle Shooting The weekly shoot of the Alexandra Defence Rifle Club was held in good weather, with poor visibility at 500 yards. R. Henderson led with the possible, and I. McArthur obtained the best score at 600 yards with 4 L The rifle badge was won by I, McArthur, and the other day prizes were won by R. Henderson and J. The Holiday Season

This year promises to be a record for holiday-makers, and hotels and boarding houses report record bookings Persons changing houses with others in Dunedin are numerous as also are people renting their houses furnished. School Staff Changes When the Alexandra District High School resumes after the summer vacation three of the present staff will have. taken up appointments elsewhere. Miss M. Riddell, of the Primary Department, has received an appointment on the staff of the Tokomairiro High School. Miss Patterson has also received another appointment, and Miss Joan Thompson, of the Secondary Department, has received notice that she has been appointed science mistress at the Girls Grammar School in Suva. She will take up her duties there in the New Year. Personal

Mr B. S. Fulton, registrar of pensions, was in Alexandra recently on official business. Miss Belle Henderson, of the Dunedin Hospital nursing staff, is at present visiting her mother in Alexandra Dr Lyon, examiner of the Trinity College of Music, conducted the practical examinations of the college in Alexandra yesterday. Dr H. O. Askew, of the Cawthron Institute, is at present in the district in connection with investigations being made into the fruitgrowing industry.
