ROAD ACCIDENTS

TO THE EDITOB Sir,—ln youi issue of December 5 there appears a photograph on page 15 depicting two cars which were said to have been burnt after a collision. This statement is quite incorrect. The photograph is that of a bus which hao. almost completed a tour of Central Otago. The mishap occurred on the Main North road north of Oamaru The flre, caused by a mechanical defect, started in the back wheel, and soon got out of control, even though every effort to remove the wheel proved unavailing. The passengers and their luggage were clear of danger before actual flames appeared. The driver of the bus had proved Himself a very careful, efficient and courteous road-user throughout the Journey which took us over many difficult routes. Therefore, I say it was not the fault of the driver, but a piece of bad luck that such a thing should happen , _ With all due respect to Mr bempie and the Road Safety Week, I would not like this unfortunate happening to be misrepresented as a collision at high speed.—T am. etc., One of the Party
