LICENSING OF INDUSTRIES

EFFICIENCY ACT REQUIREMENTS EXEMPTION PERIOD EXTENDED (Per UNrrED Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Dec. 8. Four notices are published in this week's Gazette by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. G. Sullivan), which relate to four industries licensed under the Industrial Efficiency Act, 1936. The industries referred to are the manufacture of cement, Portland and other structural or building cement, the manufacture of batteries or cells commonly known as dry cells,. the taking of oysters from oyster beds, and the export of fish, whether fresh or preserved. Under earlier Gazette notices whereby these four industries were declared licensed ones, those persons • who were then engaged in carrying on the respective industries were exempted from applying to the Bureau of Industry for licences until December 1, 1938. The effect of the four notices now published is to extend the exemption to January 1, 1940. In a" statement to-day, Mr Sullivan said that licences had been issued, or were now proposed to be issued in respect of all industries licensed under the Industrial Efficiency Act except in six cases. "I referred last week to the extension of the exemption period for the storage battery industry until April 1, 1939," stated Mr Sullivan, "and, in July, I referred to the extension to January 1, 1940, which was made in regard to the taking of fish for sale. The remaining four industries are those covered by the notices published this week, and the effect of these notices will be that those persons carrying on the respective industries on the date when they were declared by me to be subject to licensing will not need to apply to the Bureau of Industry for licences until January 1, 1940. Persons desirous of commencing these industries, however,, will be required to apply to the bureau for licences therefor as previously."
