RAIN IN HAWKE’S BAY
LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED BIG SLIP IN MANAWATU GORGE SHIPPING IN NAPIER DELAYED (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS. Nov. 3. Very heavy rain has fallen during the last two days over the whole of Hawke’s Bay, but beyond surface flooding little damage has been reported. In Hastings and Napier several streets were temporarily flooded to-night. The only serious interruption to communications occurred when the Main South road was blocked by a slip at the Woodpile end of the Manawatu Gorge. It is expected to be some days before this is cleared. A temporary bridge in Terehunga Gorge, near Dannevirke, was washed away by the rising river, The Union Airways liner to Napier was'unable to make the trip. Owing to the slip in the Manawatu Gorge the Wellington express did not connect with the Wairarapa train, and the passengers from this train were compelled to travel by a slow train, which arrived at Hastings three and a-half hours after the express.
Shipping at Napier was delayed The Doric Star, which is loading meat, will be held up two or three days. Unless the rain continues tomorrow there is no danger of the areas affected by the winter floods being again flooded.
