THE CHARGE FOR FERTILISERS
ro ra>. iciinoit Sir,—l wish to congratulate Mr R. S. Thompson, of Lawrence, for introducing a proposal for direct buying of fertiliser from the manufacturers on a cash basis. It does not appear right that an agent should receive 6s 6d per ton, or 9 per cent., for an article with which he never comes in contact. A carter can handle it twice and cart it five miles for ss. While the agents can sell stock for 2i per cent., they require 9 per cent, for superphosphate, and another 7 per cent, if it is booked. The farmer can pay those large commissions to the agents, but if hia ploughman wants £3 per week for a 60-hour week he cannot afford to pay it. Indirectly, he can pay £5 to £2O a week to stock and station agents.—l am. etc.. Hayseed.
