SIGNS OF STAMINA

NEW ZEALAND CUP FIELD There is a good dea\ of stamina represented in the field for the New Zealand : Cup. , Several of the field hold good form over two miles, and that, perhaps, may be taken as a reason why they failed to show up over shorter distances this season. They require a journey to display Iheir real racing merit. Argentic 8.11 was third in the Auckland Cup to The Buzzer 7.6. about half a length away in 3min 25 2-ssec, Padishah, a half-brother to Cuddle, has won up •to a mile and a-half, and Wotan won the Melbourne Cup with 7.11 in 3min 21jsec. Arctic King won the Great Autumn Handicap with 7.13 in 2mm 36 4-ssec. Siegmund won up to a mile and a-quarter last season, but has failed to win a race this season. Siegmund is bred to stay, as a son of Siegfried and Lilimond by LimondFarce, by San Fran or Absurd—Cowl, by King Rufus—Our Lady, by Simmer Malagigi won the Mitchelson Cup. one mile and a-half, and was got by Paladin —Drop One, by Polydamon—Slipstitch, by Henry the First. Tidewaiter has been shaping like a stayer, although he failed at the Wellington spring meeting. He was got bv Tidal from Ballymoy 11. by Sonning (by Sunder) from Bally Kill, by His Majesty. Milford is now a wed seasoned horse that shapes as if he . would stay on under a light weight. He has not what may be deemed a stayer's pedigree, but it contains a lot of stout strains. Milford was got by Anomaly from Te Anau Maid, by BezomanSister Francis, by Seaton Delaval— Agatha, by Nelson—Sister Agnes, by Rosicrucian. Milford belongs to the same family as Spearful. who won the New Zealand Cup in 1931. Bezonian sired a New Zealand Cup winner in Rouen. Leaton Delaval sired Gladsome, Miss Delaval, Gladstone, Nonette, and other high-class performers. Nelson was a great stayer, and in that direction may be classed as one of the best ever seen in. New Zealand. His three consecutive wins in the

Auckland Cup is only part of his great proof of stamina. Anomaly was a good middle-distance horse, but on breeding might have stayed any disstance. He was got by King Mark from Hoy, by Birkenhead —Links, by St. Andrew—Sabra, by St. George— Miss Flat, the dam of a great horse in Welcome Jack. King Mark was got by Marco from Galeta, by Ladas (son of Hampton)—Galanthis, by Galopin. The Marco line is prominent through Marcovil. Hurry On and Hunting Song, and also through Lord Warden, who got a New Zealand Cup winner in Cerne Abbas. Milford inherits quite sufficient. stamina to stay two miles under a light weight. Sly Fox has vet to display stamina, but he has run on at the end of a mile and a-quarter as if extra distance would not trouble him. His relationship to Hunting Cry and Sporting Blood suggests good racing merit, and his sire. Hunting Song, got Gaine Carrington and Pink Coat, one of the best three-year-olds ever raced in New Zealand. The Hunting Song stock may have become more noted for stamina, but some of them, such as Hunting Cry. were not too sound, and so not set severe tasks on the track. Boomerang has been noticed running on at the end of his races, and apparently is expected to stay. He should stay, as he was got by Iliad from Graciosa. by Gay Crusader —Mistrella, by Cyllene—Ark Royal, by Royal Hampton—Warsprite. by Galopin. Mungatoon, who is one of the ancients in the field, ranking as a nine-year-old. was got by Musketoon from Mungamaire. bv Marble Arch —Waiorongomai, by Hotchkiss —Bianca, by Black Eagle—Bessie, by Angler. Musketoon was got by Stedfast —Musk, by Myram—Zara, by Soliman. the sire of Solferino. Cricket was got by Chief Ruler from Summertime, by Grand Court—Very Hot. by Grosvenor. the only son left by the famous Sceptre. Cricket, carrying 7.6, was third in the Watkins Handicap, won by Sly Fox 8.1 from Dictate 7.10. Happy Landing was unlucky to miss a win in the Wellington Handicap, won by Quadroon 8.4 on the post, with Boomerang 7.9 three lengths away third. Happy Landing was got by Siegfried from Tressida, by Tressady—Princess Melton. by Duke of Melton —Chand Bee Bee, bv Royal Hampton. Tressida includes amongst her several foals Runnymede, who won the New Zealand Derby. Rousseau was got by Robespierre from Kildee, by Kilbrqney —Grey Linnet, by Thrush, who sired the grand-dam of Cuddle and Padishah. Valantua was got by Valkyrian from Mantua, by Solferino, and so is inbred to St. Simon, Valkyrian was got by William the Third (one of St. Simon’s best stayers) from Valkyr, by Eager—St. Natalia, by Common. The last on the list is Cape Gabo, who is a slow stayer that sometimes comes with a good run at the end of a race. He was got by Cape Horn from Missmaid, by Bezonian—Aloha, by Kilcheran —Ishtar. by Haut Brion—Nineveh. Cape Gabo is a half-brother to Spearmiss, who finished third to Chide and In the Shade in the New Zealand Cup of 1929.
