Not the Beat The horse that finishes in front is not always the best horse in a gallop. Cocksure Cocksure is an acceptor for the Stewards’ Handicap. He did not appear in the telegraphed list. Master Hotspur Master Hotspur was condemned after his apparently poor display at Wellington. It need not create surprise if he proves the form to be wrong. The Vincent Meeting The programme for the Vincent Jockey Club’s, meeting is in circulation. and shows an increase of stakes over last year’s prize list. The programme is again rich in trophies, which go with six races. Wotan In face of the fact that the general run of trainers nowadays believe in racing a horse into condition, it is notable that Wotan has only been produced once this season. Apparently Wotan has trained on satisfactorily, as he has pleased the critics on his arrival at Riccarton. A Long Break An Otago horse has not won the Welcome Stakes since Skirmisher •cored in 1893. This year Moneymore is-representing Otago, and Dark Flight Southland. The late H. Goodman won in three consecutive years. 1885-6-7, with Apropos, Silver Mark, and Sommeil. A Ban The Australian Jockey Club has decided that a new regulation should come into force forthwith, namely .that no apprentice shall be permitted, directly or indirectly, to be concerned in the ownership of a motor car unless recommended by the stewards. This seems a bit harsh, as an apprentice may be allowed to ride in dangerously big fields, but not in an adult perambulator when propelled by gas. Catalogue Catalogue’s success In the Melbourne Cup appears to have been assisted by getting a useful lead in a slow-run race and having too much speed for the opposition over the final mile. Shean’s statement that Catalogue was pulling him out of the saddle greatly reduced the distance in favour of a •horse that has proved himself particularly brilliant over a mile and a winner up to a mile and a-quarter with 8.10 in 2min 3 2-ssec. Light-weights The records of the New Zealand Cup all read in favour of the light-weights. Since Lady Zetland won in 1896 only 11 winners have carried over 8.0. Sasanof won with 8.9 in 1918. Oratress with 8.7 ih 1920, Count Cavour with 8.13 in 1927. and Nightmarch with 9.6 in 1930. These are the only winners to score with 8.7 or more since 1896. Since Bridge (7.10) won in 3min 25sec in 1910, only five horses have carried 9.0 or more into a place. Gold Light (9.0), Te Kara (9.2), Star Stranger (9.4), and Rapier were second, and Los Angelos (9.3) finished third. This shows that In a soundly-run race the topweights are lucky to get amongst the money. Counterblast When Counterblast ran as a two-year-old she ran four times for two wins and two placings. She won the Taita Handicap with 7.11 in Imin IJsec and the Karitane Handicap with 8.4 in 60£sec. Francis Drake beat her by a neck in the Welcome Stakes in Imin Isec, and in the Pioneer Handicap Royal Chief. 8.9 beat Counterblast 9,4 by a neck in 60 l-ssec. Counterblast showed a retention of her early speed when racing at the Wellington Spring meeting. She won the Awatea Handicap with 7.2 in Inyn 12Jsec in a race run in a storm of rain, and Majority, who finished second, confirmed the form by scoring a comfortable win on the final day of the meeting. Paper Slipper and Counterblast will make a strong bracket for the Stewards’ Handicap. Kinnoull v When produced at Trentham Kinnoull looked in excellent shape. He had his chance wrecked in the Watkins Handicap by being carried off the course at the start. He got away well in the Pearce Handicap, but only lasted about four or five furlongs and finished well outside the money. The Wellington meeting should helo to sharpen him up. and he cannot be overlooked in connection with the Stewards Handicap. Last spring Kinnoull gave Rebel Mate 271 b and beat him over six furlongs at Timaru in Imin 12 l-ssec. He followed with beating Catalogue 1.6 in the Wainui Handicap with 9.5 in Imin 373 sec, but was one of the also started in the Harcourt Stakes. That was his last appearance. This year Wine Card 7.13 beat Kinnoull over seven .furlongs at Ashburton in Imin 25sec and then came his recent form at Wellington. Malagigi The New Zealand. Cup candidate Malagigi was got by Paladin, who sired two previovls winners of the New Zealand Cup in Chide and Palantua, Malagigi is the only Paladin horse in this year’s race. Drop One, the dam of Malagigi, was got by Polydamon, a son of Polymelus, the sire of Paladin. Malagigi scored his first important win last season in the Nolan Handicap of one mile and a-half, with 7.3, in 2min 38sec on a holding track. He followed with a second in the Avondale Autumn Handicap of one mile and a-quarter to Airam 7.5. His next placed performance was at Waikato over a mile and a-quarter, where he ran third; then came a third over a mile at Auckland and in his final race of the season he was second over a mile and a-quarter

to King Rey 9.3 with 8.4. Some of his best form was displayed on soft going, held to be against him, when racing last week. This season Malagigi opened with two unplaced performances and then won the Mitchelson Cup with 7.12, and this may be taken as his best performance. . Cup Day Mounts
