MISS JEAN BATTEN

HONOURED ON THE CONTINENT CIVIL AIR GUARD SUGGESTION (From Our Own Correspondent* (By Air Mail) LONDON, Aug. 18. Miss Jean Batten returned to London this week from the Continent, where she had been staying with friends at Lake Como, Italy. Apparently the suggestion that her services should be made available to the new Civil Air Guard has not yet been broached to her, and at present she has no comment to make on the subiect. Miss Batten Hew to Milan in tier record-breaking aeroplane en route to Como, stopping en route at Paris and Cannes. At Paris she was received by M. Le Provost de Launay, the Lora Mayor, at a civic reception at the Hotel de Ville. A dinner was given in her honour by the Aero Club de France. At Cannes she was presented with the Harmon International Trophy, which she has won for the last three years in succession—l93s, 1936, and 1937. The Aero Club de Cannes elected her an honorary member. At Milan she left her aeroplane and continued to Como A visit was also paid to Switzerland, and a delightful holiday was enjoyed at Venice. She also motored through the beautiful Dolomites area, Northern Italy. At Lyons she was the guest of the British Consul and his wife.

Miss Batten is at present staying at Hatfield, near the London Aeroplane Club. It is possible that she may visit Glasgow to see the Empire Exhibition shortly. Later she intends to return to the Continent. On her return to England this week she was delighted to find that her mother had made a complete recovery in health, having recuperated on the South Coast.
