AN AMICABLE SINECURE
The City of London’s wholehearted indifference to anachronisms is exemplified by the annual election of four official aleconners, who will draw a salary of £lO a year for doing nothing (says the Manchester Guardian). At one time, when they were responsible for the soundness of the brews and the equity of prices and measures within the City of London, the aleconners were important officials, regularly inspecting all the alehouses and receiving a fee of from Is to 2s 6d according to I;'." 1 size of the house, for each visit. But so long ago as 1837 a commission reported that their duties had become superfluous and very sedom performed, adding that the City Corporation contemplated abolishing the office. Evidently the commissioners underestimated the conservatism of the city.
