FIXTURES September 8. —Southland championships. September 17.—Dunedin Twenty Club s Yankee tourney. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS From the telegraphed report of the final night’s play in the New Zealand championships at Hamilton, it is apparent that Miss Mavis Kerr, who lost her Singles title to Miss Nancy Fleming of Wellington, and formerly of Dunedin, did not produce the form she showed at an earlier stage of the tourney. Before the Dunedin girl went' north, however, there was . a general feeling, not only in Dunedin, that Mis- Fleming would be a serious contender for the honours. Both players apparently produced some brilliant badminton, but to win in straight sets, 11 —6, 11 —7, the new champion must have played a very consistent game.

There seems but small doubt that Miss Kerr will be selected as a member of the team to visit Australia next year. Partnered by Mrs Hawksworth, Miss Kerr was successful in retaining the Women’s Doubles title. Once again P. Hawksworth stamped himself as the foremost male exponent of the game in the Dominion, his remarkable consistency enabling him to retain the Men’s Singles Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles. In the final of the Singles Hawksworth was matched against R. Lewis, the Waikato champion, whom he defeated in straight sets 15—10. 15—10. Associated with G. Pearce (Wellington), a former member of the local United Club, he won the Men’s Doubles Championship fairly comfortable; and with Mrs Hawksworth. he carried off the mixed event by defeating Pearce and Miss Kerr in the final. The match, however, went to three sets —12 —15. 15—10, 15—11. A GRADE COMPETITION As the United team defaulted to Dunedin Twenty on Tuesday night, and Balmacewen defaulted to Dunedin, the Interclub A Grade Competition has now been completed. For the first time in the history of the club the Dunedin Twenty team won the competition and secured the Bolwell Shield, which was presented by Mrs Bolwell in 1934. Twenty is the second club to hold the shield, the previous holders being Dunedin. The following table shows the positions of the teams at the conclusion of the competition:—

NOTES The Invercargill Club has advised the Dunedin Twenty Club that it will not be sending a team on Saturday to play a friendly match. Activities for the year at the Dunedin Twenty Club will be brought to a conclusion on Saturday night, September 17, when a tournament will be held. A dance will follow. Miss K. Kerr informed “ Shuttle ” on her return from Hamilton that the Dominion tournament will be held at New Plymouth next year. When Miss Kerr lost her Singles title to Miss N. Fleming at the national championships it was the first occasion that she had been defeated in straight SC The Dunedin Club will cease activities for the season at the end of the month.

THE UNION CLUB There were strongly-contested games in the association C Grade match Union I v. Union 11, at Brydone Hall. The first team won with eight victories to four, the losers securing two men’s events, a women’s double, and a mixed double. For Union I, Facer and Owens beat Parry and Ghent '15—13, 15 —9, and also N. L. This series of games produced some vigorous play. Misses Duncan and Sinclair (Union IPs second pair) deserved their win at 21—18 from Misses Houston and Coxon (the opposing first pair), who beat Misses Rae and Grant 21—8, Misses Pezet and Ledgerwood won both their doubles 21—14 and 21—10 respectively. from the rival first and second pairs: In the Mixed Doubles, McDonald and Miss Rae won the only game for Union 11, beating Owens and Miss Coxon (second pair) 21—17. Three Mixed Doubles went to # the home side, the visitors’ win in thfs section being by the first pair, and Miss B. Anderson and Adcock. The most even scoring in this section was in the gaipe that Misses Duffy and Ledgerwood won 15 —l3 from Mornington’s first pair.

The sole game won by Roslyp in the club’s A Grade , match with Mosgiel was that which Johnson and Macdonald (first pair) defeated Mitchell and Frew (second pair) 15—10. In the Mixed Doubles. N. L. Millar and Miss White provided the strongest opposition with 10 points against, Frew and Miss Moodie in the fourth pairing. Two Women’s Doubles were fairly close, Misses Parker and Begg (Roslyn s first pair) scoring 13 points against Misses Mitchell and Kaye and Misses E. and R. White securing 11 points against the Mosgiel opposition. ’ '

NEXT WEEK’S TOURNAMENT At a meeting of the Dunedin Badminton Union recently the president (Mr J. W. T. Owens) presided over a large attendance. ■ ' The president referred to the loss to the executive and the Mosgiel Club caused by the departure on promotion of Mr D. Stuart, who has been transferred to Timaru in. the employ of Messrs-John Mill and Co. It was decided that a minute of appreciation of Mr Stuart’s services be placed on record. The holding of a championship meeting over two nights at Brydone Hall was agreed upon. The probable dates are September 15 and 16. It was decided that, in addition to having A and B Grade, a handicap section should be introduced. Each section would consist of Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s and Women’s Singles, and all handicap games would be 21 up. Any player who had played two games in A Grade during the year could not enter in the B Grade. The respective championship games in Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s Singles would be of 21 points until the semifinal, the semi-finals and finals being three games of 15 up. Games in the Women’s Doubles and Singles would consist of 15 points, except for the semi-finals and finals which would be the best of three of 11 up. There would be no set point in connection with the tournament. It was decided that the entry fee would be 6d per section, with Is the minimum. The cost of shuttles for each first game would be shared by the competitors: thereafter the losing player or pair would be responsible. Entries, accompanied by fees and notification regardine club ladder position, must be in not later than September 12. Messrs J. Adcock, F. Nicol, and J.
