This statement was made by the' Postmaster-general (Mr F. Jones) in an interview this evening, This rate does not apply to correspondence for China or other foreign countries served through.Hongkong. . "- ■-. : ■, Mr Jones said that advice had been received, frdm the United Kingdom that, commencing on September 4, all letters from Great Britain' for Hongkong would be carried by air to their destination without surcharge. When the Empire air mail scheme , was brought into operation in July the air service operating between Bangkok and Hongkong was hot included in the general arrangements for the carriage of letters by air to their, destination without surcharge. The' charge for New Zealand.correspondence intended to b& carried by air to Hongkong had been 6d for each half-ounce.' ■■'■: < "It is proposed that as from September 4 this surcharge shall be abolished," Mr Jones said, '? and . all-New Zealand correspondence for Hongkong prepaid at the Empire rate of lfd for half-ounce will' be conveyed to Its destination by air. The lid rate will not apply to correspondence for China and other foreign countries served through Hongkong. Correspondence for any foreign country concerned for which air despatch isdesired will still require to be prepaid at special rates." ,v-; ; .
