Spearfelt, wfro won the Melbourne Cup in 1926, has been a great success at the-stud in Queensland. ■ ' Nomenclature. ; wi ;.,.,.„,.,.... ti .*, ;„ ~. """" Some : NeW' v Zealand'-bred" two-year-olds sold at the Sydney and Melbourne yearling sales and at present in work in both centres have been named as follows:—Wilson, by Siegfried—Lilock; Xavier, by Lord Warden—El Boa: Sun Belle, by Beau Pere—Summertime; Shy, by Beau Pere—Cocoanut; Maschera, by Ringmaster—Veil; and Fredwyn, by Siegfried—Enmity. Gay Shield The Gay Shield mare Gay Sheila, who has been returned to the Dominion from Australia to be mated with Foxbridge, was an outstanding performer in the early stages of her career. She won three races as a two-year-old, and went to even greater heights m the following term, her successes including, the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, the Champion Hack Plate,. Avondale Guineas, and Great Northern Guineas. She was unluckily beaten in the Railway Handicap by Silver Streak, and broke down while contesting the Derby. It, was during an enforced spell that she badly injured a hock, and she was not the same mare afterwards, although she did win a small event in Australia. During her racing career Gay Sheila was a Winner of £1730 in stakes. Staying Sires Commenting on the success of Rockfel in the One Thousand Guineas and the Oaks, "Audax " (Hofrse and Hound) recalls the consistency tyith which horses by staying sires have scored in the classic races of England in the past 20 years. Rockfel conies of the Musket line, and is by Felsteacl, sire of .Double Remove (a brother .to. Early School), who is now at the Kia Ora Stud,', New South Wales. "Audax" says:. "English breeders will, it is to be hoped; begin to realise that to win either the Derby, Oaks or St. Leger, it is necessary for them to have their mares mated with sires which stay. These three races, which, together with the two shorter ones, the Two and One Thousand Guineas, both run over the Rowley Mile, constitute the chief events of the year for three-year-olds. Since racing was generally resumed in 1919, after the conclusion of the 'war,'the* following have been begotten by horses that stayed well: Derby (1920), Spion Kop, by Spearmint; (1922), Captain Cuttle, by Hurry On; (1923). Papyrus, by Tracery; 1924), Sansovino, by Swynford. In 1926 and the following year, sons of Hurry On, Coronach, and Call Boy were successful, and in 1928 came Felstead, by Spion Kop. The next two winners. Trieo and Blenheim, wore by Blandford (son of Swynford), while Gainsborough begot Hyperion, who won so easily in 1933. Both excellent stayers were Windsor Lad and un- ■ beaten Bahram, the winners in the two following years, and they were by Blandford. while Mahmoud, winner of the 1936 Derby in record time (2min 33 4-ssec), Is a son of Blenheim Midday Sun, who scored last year, comes from that very good stayer, Solario. and the male line of the latest very easy Winning Bois Roussell is full of staying blood. Turning to the Oaks, Bayuda, who won in 1919, was by Bayardo, and a very easy winner, as was Solario of the St. Leger and Ascot Gold Cup; and Charlebelle, who won in 1920, was by Charles O'Malley; a fine stayer, as we all know, was Son-in-Law. who begot the 1924 Oaks victress. Straitlace. AH the next Ave winners were sired by stayers, Saucy Sue being by Swynford, Short Story, by Buchan (who won the Ascot Gold Cup, but was disqualified), and Beam, by Galloper Light (winner of the Grand Prix de Paris), while Toboggan and Penncycomequick had unbeaten Hurry On as their sire. ' Then Rose,of England (1930), was by Teddy, and the next French victress, Brulette, was

a daughter of the notable French stayer, Bruleur. In 1932 came Udaipur. by Blandford, and Light Brocade, who scored two years later, was by Galloper Light. The 1935 victress, Quashed, a great stayer that also won the Ascot Gold Cup, was a daughter of Obliterate, who stayed very well, he being by the St. Leger hero. Tracery; Exhibitionist, who ran away with last year's Oaks, is by Solario; while b'elstead begot the equally easy winnei or the race' this year. The staying horses to beget.St. Leger winners during the same period have been Keysoe (1919). by Swynford; Royal, Lancer (1922), by Spearmint; Tranquil (1923) by Swynford; Solario (1925), by Gainsborough; Coronach (1926), by Hurry On; Book Law (1927), by Buchan; Trigo (1929), by Blandford: Singapore (1930). by Gainsborough; Sandwich (1931), by Sansovino (who ran away with the 1924 Derby in a sea of mud); •and Hyperion, by Gainsborough, was the easy St. Leger hero of 1933. Windsor Lad and Bahram were both by Blandford, the 1936 winner, Boswell, was by Bosworth. the Ascot Gold Cup victor of 1930, and whom Trigo onlv defeated by a short head for the previous year's St. Leger; while Chulmleigh, who won the race last year, is a son' of Singapore. All this goes to prove without any argument that in most • instances these rac«s have beer> won for many years now by the stock of staying stallions, and if breeders only think of speed instead ,of stamina it, will be. so ; much • 'the worse for the supremacy of Hhe British thoroughbred in the near future." < ■; , .< v* >
