Golf About 30 members of the Gore Golf Club participated in a Stableford match at the Croydon links on Saturday afternoon. The greens were in good order and the standard of golf was high. The match was won by H. H. Doughty, with M. S. Tansley runner-up. The following were the best cards:—H. H. Doughty 22—15—37, M. S. Tansley 30—5—35, G. D. Caldwell 23-10-33, C. R. Barron 19-13 —32. J. Y. Allan 18—14—32, J. P. Steans 18-14-32. L. G. Thomson 23-7-30, A, B. Caverhill 19—11—30. The semi-finals of the knock-out competition for the McCorkindale Cup were also played on Saturday afternoon. the results being as follows:-*-L. G. Thomson beat J. Y. Allan at the twentieth: L. E. West beat C. R. Barron 3 and 2. Thomson and West will now meet in the final.
Territorial Association
The need for strengthening the land forces of the Dominion and for an awakening of public interest in the work of th° territorial units of New Zealand were stressed at a public meeting in the Gore Soldiers’ Club rooms for the purpose of foi’ming a Gore sub-branch of the Southland Territorial Forces Association. The meeting was presided over by the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and was largely attended by citizens of the town. Major H. C. Mackenzie, Lieutenant A. R. Cockerell. D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C.. and Messrs R. J. Hannan and L. A. Blackmore, members of the Invercargill Association, briefly addressed the meeting, outlining the aims and objects of the association, and at the conclusion it was unanimously decided to form a Gore branch. Officers for the new association were elected as follows:—President, Mr H. H. Doughty; vice-president. Mr H. A. Price; secretary, Mr E. F. Selby; executive —Messrs T. F. Rusbridge, A. J. Hawke and E. H. W. Rowntree, with power to add.
