Mrs D. M. Irvine and Miss Joyce Haggitt will leave to-morrow to take part in the Wanaka golf championships.

Dr and Mrs lan Gebbie left Malaya on August 13 for London, where they will reside for some time. They intended to leave the boat at Marseilles and travel overland through France.

Mr and Mrs G. Crow, who have been in Great Britain and travelling on the Continent during this year, left London yesterday by the Ceramic, and will return to New Zealand via South Africa. They will arrive in Sydney on October 10.

The South Dunedin branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met on Thursday afternoon last in the schoolroom of Wesley Church. Correspondence from Miss Gray, district secretary, with reference to the district conference to be held this year in Oamaru was read and discussed. In the absence of the treasurer and cradle roll superintendent, it was decided that any report for the conference would be incomplete. Sympathy was expressed with Miss Ford, the treasurer, in her absence owing to a bereavement, The president consented to act as delegate to the Oamaru district convention. A request was received from the district conference for a systematic distribution of literature and the moral support of the churches prior to the licensing poll. Mrs Donaldson read an extract from a Church of Christ bulletin on the subject of a Christian’s duties.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised.

The monthly meeting of the Sawyers’ Bay Institute was held on Thursday last, Mrs Paterson presiding. The motto was “Gentle words fall lightly, but have great weight,” and the rollcall was "What I would do if I were a man.” The competition—daintiest plate of bread and butter—resulted; Mrs Munro 1, Mrs Broadley i, Mrs Newsome 3; best doll made of kitchen utensils: Mrs Broadley 1, Mrs Millar 2, Mrs Newsome 3. Mesdames Mason and Barckley, of the Green Island Institute, gave a demonstration on quilting. Mesdames Millar and Munro were the hostesses.

Mrs Watson presided over the August meeting on Tuesday last of the Lake Waitaki Institute. The motto was “A still tongue maketh a wise head,” and the roll-call was “ A pleasant surprise.” Four members of the North Otago Executive were present. Mrs Douthwaite and Miss Pattle gave reports on the conference in Wellington. The visitors gave demonstrations on rug making and hand work. The competitions resulted as follows;—Shortbread —Mrs Short 1, Mrs Cameron 2, Mrs Green and Mrs Campbell (equal) 3; knitting—Mrs Green 1. Mrs Austin 2, Mrs Campbell 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Carman, Cameron. Campbell, and Green.

Mrs R. Robertson presided at the monthly meeting of the Eveline Institute. A report on the Dominion conference was given by the delegate. Mrs Robertson presented the producer of the Drama Club with the Drama Shield, and complimented the members on their success. The competition results were: Something made from something old—Mrs Boyd 1 and 3, Mrs Douglas 2; scones—Mrs Ross 1, Mrs Woods 2. Mrs Allen 3.

The South Hill Institute hold its monthly meeting on Thursday last, when one new member was enrolled. The motto was, “ Make our heads save our heels,” and the roll call was "Three things a husband should do.” The competitions resulted as follows: Bloom—Mrs Whitaker 1, Mrs Brain 2, Miss Paterson 3; carrots and parsnips— Mrs Rawson 1. Mrs Whitaker 2: Belgium biscuits —Mrs Oats 1, Mrs Whitaker 2, Miss Paterson 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Maurice, Shcrwin, Rawson. and Whitaker. EGG-PRESERVING TIME.
