THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, JULY 4, 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

The question of Assisted Immigration at the public expense, is one of considerable importance at the present time, and is deserving of full and dispassionate consideration, by all who are interested in the welfare and advancement of Otago. . . . When the necessity of procuring a more abundant supply of labor from the Home Country is urged upon the consideration of the Government by farmers and other employers, with a view to render it possible for them to raise and dispose'of their produce at remunerative prices, ploughmen and other working men are apt to take the alarm and to accuse the advocates of Assisted Immigration of being influenced mainly, or solely, by a selfish desire to promote their own prosperity, and to advance their own interests at the expense of “ the poor working man.” But the subject should be considered, not as it affects the interests of any particular class of the community, but as it bears upon the general welfare and advancement of the Province. From this point of view it is assuredly much more desirable that the means of obtaining a comfortable and honorable livelihood should be placed within the reach of the greatest possible number, than that a lucky few should monopolise the advantages which settlement in a new country is calculated to afford. - .

The smart little schooner, built by Messrs Johnson and Kelly, near the Pelichet Bay Jetty, was successfully launched yesterday afternoon. The “ Argus ” of the 20th ult., says:— “Three pictures by M. Chevalier are now on view at Messrs Wilkie and Webster’s window, in Collin’s street. They are all sketches of New Zealand scenery The latest, an oil-painting, is a view of Akaroa Bay; but, although minutely finished, and showing clearness of detail and great finish of touch, is too harsh in coloring and too crude in tone to be placed in the first rank of M. Chevalier’s productions. The other two are water-colors —‘ Eagle s Nest,' and • Puerua River’ The latter is delicately finished, and presents some fine rendering of shadow; but the ‘Eagle’s Nest’ is undoubtedly the finest picture of the three, . . .”

THE VOTE ON GOLDFIELDS MANAGEMENT.

The Provincial Vote taken recently on the question of Goldfields Management has notoriously much surprised and annoyed both the avowed Centralists and those processed friends of Provincialism who act as though they thought that the best way to promote the prosperity of the Province must be to subordinate all its interests to those of the Stafford Ministry and its array of dependents. . The total number of votes recorded was 8484. of which 177 were in the negative. .
