IMPROVEMENTS TO STREETS INSTRUCTIONS TO ENGINEER The report of the Works Committee of the City Council to be submitted at the meeting of the council on Monday night states that the city engineer has been instructed to act in the following matters:— Immediate Action The erection of walling at portion of Middleton road, at an estimated cost of £4O. The cost of this work, which is necessary to retain the footway, will be payable by the subdivider The removal of a bank to the street boundary at Pennant street on the frontage to Lots 4 and 5 of subdivision of allotments 26 and 30, township of Broughton and the extension of the batter into the property to enable a footway to be formed on this frontage. The estimated cost, namely £4O. is chargeable to the contingency vote. The metalling of portion of Glen road where widening has taken place opposite Osborne terrace, at an estimated cost of £3O, chargeable to the new carriageway vote This work is necessary to nrovide a turning place for vehicles The improvement of the deep gutter at Montague street by stone pitching, at an estimated cost of £5 chargeable to the contingency vote The installation of a new street light at the intersection of Leven street and City road, at an estimated cost of £5 Widening on the frontage of the Children’s Best Home and High School properties at Highgate, between St. John’s Church and Oban street, at an estimated cost of £950. This work, together with the cost of purchasing the necessary land, will be a charge against the petrol tax vote The improvement of the improvised ford over the Water of Leith at Booth’s road at an estimated cost of £4O. chargeable to the petrol tax vote. The removal of a bank as Balmacewen road to enable the road to be formed to its full width, subject to the consent of the Government Housing Department being obtained to the deposit of the spoil on its property in Balmacewen road. Paving of portion of Taieri road, north side, between Walton street and Nairn street, at an estimated cost of £25. chargeable to the petrol tax vote Prospective Work The engineer has been instructed to record the following matters for consideration with the draft allocations for the current financial year:— Provision of kerbing and guttering and a footway on the western side of Queen street for a distance of approximately eight chains from Pitt street in a northerly direction. Estimated cost £266. Provision of kerbing and guttering and a footway in Pitt street, north side, below Heriot row. Estimated cost £7O. Renewal of kerb and channel in Norwood street, south-east side, north of Echovale avenue. Estimated cost £l6O. Sealing of Montgomery avenue and repairing kerbing and guttering in this street at a total estimated cost . of £ll9. Provision of a handrail and improvements to the footway in Littlebourne road, north side, below Tweed street. Estimated cost £4O. ■ Extension of paving in Signal Hill road beyond the tram terminus to McGregor street. Estimated cost £350. Widening portion of Crosby street, where land has been dedicated for the purpose at three properties, at a total estimated cost of £460.
