TERRITORIAL ASSOCIATION
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The fortnightly meeting of the Territorial Association of Otago was held in the Commercial Travellers’ Club, there being present Messrs Fulton (in the chair), Grenville, Creeser, Longbottom, M. Stewart, Hogg, Scoular, McKnight, Kidson, Mitchell, Wilson, White and Rhodes. The secretary reported an excellent response from employers in respect to the appeal for permission to allow employees leave for camp training without loss of pay. It was encouraging to find how wholeheartedly the employers were willing to co-operate. It was also encouraging to note the large number of members who were joining the association and helping with donations, so making it possible to formulate a plan at an early date from which the Territorial Army could benefit and through which recruiting could be stimulated. Talks were being delivered regularly over the air and a large number of firms had made a short portion of the time of their staffs available for lectures. In respect to the Otago Regimental Depot Guidon Camp, the deputation that waited on the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) reported that it had been warmly received and promised support. Mr Jones stated that he would do all within his power to see that the request of the old Otago Mounted Regiment would receive full and careful consideration and a granting of such request if at all possible. The Publicity Sub-committee reported that it might be possible to arrange an essay competition through the columns of both daily papers: that the co-operation of the Scottish Society might be enlisted, and also that of the rifle clubs. The question of forming branches in Oamaru, Roxburgh, Mosgiel, and Middlemarch was discussed and the necessary arrangements made. Representatives were allotted to complete the lectures as arranged with the different firms who had given of their employees’ time for that purpose, and also with the football clubs, the Bankers’ Guild, Transport Drivers’ Union, etc. Mt Mitchell undertook to make ar* rangements for a short three-min-utes talk at the interval at tin theatres.
