THE VOLUNTEER ARMY
ENCOURAGING RECRUITMENT MINISTER’S GRATIFICATION (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, June 17. “ Two recent recruiting efforts for Territorial units show that young men of the right type are coming forward in increased numbers, and that our volunteer army is on the up grade,” said the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones), who arrived here to-day. The Minister added that at Napier a field battery of the New Zealand Artillery was re-formed about a fortnight ago. At the first parade of recruits for inspection by the battery commander, 95 men attended, of whom 68 were selected for immediate enrolment, and the others, the majority of whom were well up to standard, placed on a waiting list. In Wellington, the 22nd Territorial Anti-aircraft Battery had been formed as a new unit, 'he Minister continued. An appeal for recruits was broadcast at the air display recently, when the public had an opportunity of seeing the efficiency of this modern equipment. As a result, 105 men, mostly young technicians, had applied to join the battery. These figures spoke for themselves, and were most encouraging, the Minister concluded, and help by all concerned could produce similar results throughout New Zealand.
