WOMEN’S ORGANISATION SCHEME IN BRITAIN (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, June 16. (Received June 17, at 5.5 p.m.) Plans for recruiting 500,000 in an organisation called “ the women’s voluntary service ” were announced to-night. The dowager Lady Reading is at the head of the organisation, which will not be officially associated with any of the defence forces but will work in close cooperation with local authorities, Government departments, and other women’s organisations. The main duties will be in connection with air raid precautions. Women between 17 and 65 are being invited to volunteer, whether married or single. They will receive training in anti-gas and general air measures. There will be no uniform and no attempt to copy a military type of organisation.
