QUEENSTOWN The Weather The weather at the week-end was very stormy and cold. The mountains received their first real coating of snow, which clothed them nearly to the water's edge. There was bright sunshine yesterday, and the weather seemed to be more settled. Bridge Evening The local branch of the Plunket Society again held a very successful bridge and 500 card evening last week in the home of Mrs Hunter. The cosy rooms, ornamented with seasonal flowers and drapings, contributed largely to the enjoyment of the numerous patrons. As the evening was held for the purpose of raising funds for the carrying on of the local branch a good sum was realised by an entrance fee. The prizes were won as follows: Bridge, Mrs S. F. Curie and Mr F. Rankin; consolations. Miss Helen Burnett and Mr L. Lewis; 500, Mrs W. A. Anderson and Mr J. C. Scott; consolations, Mrs J. B. Hamilton and Mr S. Aburn. Football The weather was anything but good for Saturday’s matches. Country and Glenorchy met on the Frankton ground, and the former registered a win by 13 points to 6. In the match Arrow v. Queenstown at Arrowtown the result was a draw —3 all. Queenstown now leads in the competition with 11 points, Country has 6 points. Glenorchy 4. and Arrow 3. Basketball At the annual meeting of the Basketball Association Dr W. A. Anderson was re-elected president and Mrs H. R. Easlgate re-elected secretary. The following clubs have entered for the Gardiner Cup competition this year:— Rovers, two teams; St. Joseph’s, one team; Arrowtown. one team: High School, one team; Lower Shotover, one team. The matches were commenced on Wednesday. The Arrow Public and Convent Schools are drawn to play in a series of matches. Mr J. A. Thomson has kindly offered a cup for competition between the teams. This will become the property of the team which wins it three times in succession. Lake County Inspectorship The Lake County Council had a big task set it yesterday when it opened over 60 applications for the position of county inspector, a vacancy having octurred through the resignation of Mr James Powell. There were several well-qualified applicants, which were narrowed down to three. The final selection has been deferred pending further inquiries. Golf The following is the draw for the men’s section of the Wakatipu Golf Club during the present week:—Wednesday players: Hall v. Robertson, Curtis v. Wilkinson, Royds v. Stark, Dwyer v. Menlove. Saturday players: Smith v. Farrant. Wright v. McKay, Wigley v. Mclntyre, Herbert v. Landrebe. Anderson v. Nelson, Griffin v. Macdonald, Tomkin v. scorer.

Personal Mr and Mrs A. Mackenzie, Mount Nicholas Station, and Mr and Mrs J. Mackenzie, Walter Peak, returned at the week-end from Dunedin after attending the show. Messrs D. Jardine, W. G. Reid and D, H. Cockburn. who visited Dunedin last week for the show and various conferences, have returned to the district. A number of other district people went to Dunedin for the show. Mrs Hunter and her sister, Mrs Jago, have gone to Dunedin for the winter. Mrs G. D. Cockerill, of Milton, has just spent a month’s holiday as the guest of Mr and Mrs W. E. Vallance, Frankton. Mr James McDonald, of Wharehuanui. was among visitors to Dunedin during Show Week. Mr and Mrs G. Jones, of Queenstown. have with them at present Mr Jones’s mother from Dunedin. Mrs Jones has booked her passage for England. where she will make a lengthy stay with a daughter. Mr George Thompson, youngest son of Mr J. Thompson, Queenstown, has gone to Australia to try his luck in the mining fields, Mrs W. Avres and son. Invercargill, are the guests of Mrs D. Murchison for a week or so. TAPANUI The Weather The weather for the past week has been particularly cold after a long period of fine weather. At the beginning of last week the weather was showery, but on Friday last heavy rain was experienced, followed by snow and sleet. On Monday morning the Blue Mountains were covered with a liberal coating of snow. The rain so far experienced has been beneficial to farming lands. No damage has been reported in this district by gales as in other parts of the Dominion. Borough Council The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. B. Naylor) presiding over a full attendance of councillors. Mr Thomas Edgar wrote stating that, as the appointment of a town valuer was acain due, he would like the council to' consider the appointment of a suitable valuer. —It was decided to inform Mr Edgar that the valuer had been appointed for a term of three years, and it was not the council’s intention to upset the appointment. An application from the Fire Brigade for permission to purchase 400 feet of new hose and couplings at a cost of £44 was deferred for decision at the next meeting. Mr D. H. Keir’s application to have a drain cleaned out and deepened in Kent street was referred to the Works Committee for its report. The Mayor submitted a comprehensive report and an estimated statement of receipts and expenditure for the current year. He stated that the receipts over a number of years had remained practically stationary at approximately £I2OO, whilst the expenditure had an ever rising tendency, and appeared likely to increase in the future. The greater portion of the expenditure was comprised of fixed charges, and the money available for new works would be very limited. He asked that councillors should carefully consider any matters brought forward. After the report had been considered and after he had answered a number of questions, the Mayor .was complimented on his excellent report. SEACLIFF Miniature Rifle Club The weekly shoot of the Seacliff Miniature Rifle Club was held on Tuesday night, there being a good attendance of members. Shooting was good, and competition keen. The buttons were won by F. Alderton (Men’s Handicap) after a keen shoototT; Miss M. Edwards (Women’s Rifle) with 75 and Miss I. Singleton (Women’s Handicap) after a shoot-off. The best shoot of the evening was pul up by M. Gale with 76. The average for the best 10 shots was 73.9. Scores were as follows:—M. Gale 76—4—80. Miss I. Singleton 75—11—80, Miss M. Edwards 75—5—80. W. Murray 755 —80. S, Nicolson 75—5—80. W. Singleton 74—5—79. J. Farmer 74—4 —7B. F. Alderton 73 —11 —80, A. Nicolson 727 —79, Miss A, Lothian 71— 11—80, W. Wilson 70—9—79, R. Sprague 69—5—74. W. Siddells 61—12—73. A special handicap prize was won by F. Alderton by a narrow margin of one point from Miss A. Lothian.
