A TRIP TO GERMANY
MISS BESSIE THOMSON’S TOUR An interesting account of her experiences during a visit to Germany is contained in a letter to a Dunedin friend from Miss Bessie Thomson, writing from Fountain Court Flats, Buckingham Palace road, London. “Hitler has really done amazing things in Germany,” Miss Thomson writes, “ and we travelled thousands of miles without seeing a poor person or a poor looking house. Everyone appears to be so happy and there is no unemployment. We were advised not to go to Germany until after the Austrian plebiscite, as it was feared there would be a disturbance, but we took a chance as we had only a month free. Really, Germany was as peaceful as Dunedin. We did not go into Austria, as there was some trouble about money, but we intend going there in July.” Miss Thomson also makes mention of a motor trip over the Bavarian Alps, a visit to Heidelburg, which she describes as the most beautiful place she
has seen, and a voyage down the Rhine,
Miss Thomson concludes by mentioning that, on her return to London from the Continent, she was delighted to receive a large newsy mail from Dunedin.
