KINE-PHOTOGRAPH CLUB
ADDRESS BY MR R. F. RIGGS A meeting of the Otago Kine-phototi graphic Club was addressed recently by Mr R. F. Riggs on the. subject of “Exposure and Continuity.” The lecturer commenced by defining exposure as applicable to the motion picture camera—namely, the degree of opening of the camera shutter, the speed of the film in use. the number of frames exposed per second, and so on. He went on to explain the action of light on the film, and how the diaphragm had to be adjusted to the correct “stop” to ensure the correct exposure being given to the film. This naturally led up to the question of exposure meters, some of which were demonstrated to the members, those displayed including types of the earlier exposure recorders which relied almost entirely on the human element for their accuracy (or inaccuracy) up to the very latest meter which incorporated the photo-electric cell, and which if used with discretion were very efficient indeed in artificial light as well as daylight. The question of continuity was then discussed. Continuity is absolutely essentia] if the photographer wishes to present an interesting film to his audience. Continuity should be maintained as far as possible in the filming of the subject, but should this not be practicable, it is often possible to retain interest by the use of well-thought-out titles, but every sequence should tell a story, no matter how simple.. Disjointed snapshots never hold the interest of an audience. In conclusion a film made up of odd news shots, which had been made up into a most interesting reel by discriminate editing and careful titling was screened.
