The area of Australia is almost as great as that of the United States, is fourfifths of that of Canada, is nearly three-fourths of the whole area of Europe, and is almost 25 times as great as that of Great Britain and Ireland. The area of the North Island of New Zealand and adjacent islets is 44,281 square miles, of the South Island and adjacent islets 58,092-, and of Stewart Island and adjacent islets 670 square miles. The area of Chatham Islands is 372 square miles.
