CONCILIATION COUNCIL

DENTAL TECHNICIAN’S DISPUTE

The Conciliation Council held a sitting yesterday to hear an application by the Otago and Southland Assistants’ and Technicians’ Union for an award, the respondents being the Dental Employers’ Guild. The commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided. Messrs R. N. Watson, C. S. Phelan and R J. Calvert represented the union, and Messrs A. S. Cookson. J. C. Kirkland and T T Cooper the employers. Complete agreement was reached, based on the awards in operation in northern districts. The rates of wages were fixed as follows:—-A grade technicians, £6; B grade, £5 per week; females, three-fifths of the rates for males; female assistants and dental nurses, commencing at £1 per week and rising by 5s increments every six months to £2 5s and thereafter £2 10s. Annual leave of two weeks was granted to all workers. In view of the large numbei ot employers who will be affected, the dale of commencing the term of the award, which will be one year, was referred to the Arbitration Court.
