James Roy Johnston Laurie, who was represented by Mr O. G. The accused had previously been at the depot, and, on being interviewed, he admitted the offence. The accused was employed by a motorists’ protection firm, keeping a watch over parked cars, and in view of his record, it seemed undesirable that he should be in such employment. He was 25 years of age and single, and had been before the court on two previous occasions, but inquiries had shown that he was more weak than criminal.—Mr Stevens said that the accused had had an unfortunate boyhood and had really never had a real chance in life. In the circumstances counsel asked that he should be given an opportunity to rehabilitate himself.—A conviction was entered, and the accused was admitted to probation for a year, conditional on his making restitution and taking only employment approved by the probation officer
