AGREEMENT IN CONCILIATION NEW SCALE OF PAYMENTS Details of a proposed new award for musicians in ail the industrial districts in the Dominion except Taranaki were settled in the Conciliation Council, at Wellington last week. The main clauses under discussion were those relating to wages and hours of work. The wages clause is to operate from June 13 next. Mr M. J. Reardon, Con ciliation Commissioner, presided. For performers at general theatrical performances including operatic, touring pictures, dramatic, comedy and vaudeville shows wages were fixed at £4 15s a week of six performances, and 13s 4d for each matinee, and for performers at resident vaudeville or variety shows, £4 a week for six performances, and 13s 4d for each matinee. Performing musicians directing an orchestra are to be paid not less than £1 7s 6d above the award rates. For six or more performances between 7.30 p.m, and 9 p.m., or 8 p.m. and 9.15 p.m. in any one week musicians in picture theatres are to receive 10s a performance: for three, four, or five performances, 11s; for two per formances, 14s 6d; for one performance, 17s. A substitute appointed for any performance is to be paid the rate provided for that performance. All time worked before the hour of commencement is to be paid for at 6s an hour, and if a performance extends beyond 9 p.m., or 9.15 p.m., a performer must be paid not less than 15s 0a a performance. Musicians directing orchestras will be paid 2s 6d a performance above the award rales. For rehearsals in any one week musicians will be paid 2s 6d an hour for the first four hours, and thereafter 5s an hour; 7s 6d an hour after midnight; 5s an hour on Christmas Day; and 5s hour for engagements of not more, than three performances. From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. solo musicians at card parties, concerts, dances, assemblies, night clubs, cabarets, or skating rinks are to be paid £1 2s 6d; from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m., £1 7s 6d; from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., £1 12s 6d. Each performer in an orchestra will receive 17s Bd. £1 2s 6d, and £1 7s 6d respectively. All work done after midnight is to be paid for at 7s 6d an hour, wages fixed for musicians employed from 9 p.m to 12 midnight on six nights in the week including an hour from 12 midnight to 1 a.m. on two days, were £5 10s a week, the leader to receive £1 Is above the award rates.

Musicians employed in cafes, hotels, private hotels, and boarding houses are to receive 5s an hour, with a minimum rate of 10s or a weekly wage of £2 5s the leader to receive 10s extra. Other rates fixed were: For performers at picnics from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., £1 ss, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., 17s 6d, bandmaster 5s extra; at races and on ship excursions from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. £1 10s, from 12 noon to 8 p.m., £1 ss, from 1.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., £l, band-

master 12s 6d extra; at sports parties from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., £1 ss, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.. 17s 6d, from 7 p.m, to 10 p.m., 17s 6d, bandmaster 5s extra; at garden parties 5s an hour with a minimum of 15s, bandmaster 5s extra; at shows, bazaars, and exhibitions, 14s 6d for each performance of two hours and a-half, bandmaster 5s extra. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of 5s an hour, except where otherwise specified. Unless meals are provided each musician at outdoor performances between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. and exceeding four hours will, be entitled to not more than 2s 6d meal money. An extra day's wages is to be paid for all work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday, or Anzac Day, and two day’s pay for all work done on Sundays. Sole performers providing their own music library are to be given an allowance of 5s a week. Double-bass players, harpists, and drummers are to be granted free cartage for their instruments and accessories to and from their respective engagements once during the currency of each engagement.
