DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

WINTER MEETING OPENS TO-DAY

PROMISE OF INTERESTING SPORT

THE FANCIED CANDIDATES

By Sentinel

The Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting will open today with a card, that should supply interesting sport. The going will be on the soft side, and the following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:—

Tahuna Steeples.—Burwood, Bally Brit, Kelly the Crow.

Trial Handicap.—Sheeny, Triple Cone, Cone Peak or Auctor.

Otago Hurdles.—McHeath, The Surgeon, Fireguard or Superex.

Brighton Handicap.—Gillie, Ointilla, Settlement or Balmenter.

Otago Steeplechase.—Signaller, Trisox. Birthday Handicap.—Studley Royal, Mungatooa, High Glee.

j Winter Handicap.—Araboa, Rodeur, Peony Rose ’or Night wings.

St, Clair Handicap.—Palmyra, Waitoru, Thermidor or Astaire. '

FORM AND FIGURES A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS HURDLES, STEEPLES, AND FLAT X RACES !tb. The day’s sport will be furnished by a varied card, comprising hurdle races, steeplechases, and events on the flat. In what follows, the form of the pandidates engaged is brought under -feview. TAHUNA STEEPLECHASE A field of 13 figures on the card for the Tahuna Steeplechase, but Signaller may be started in the Otago Steeplechase and allow Burwood to represent the stable. Burwood has several placed performances of merit to his credit over hurdles, and has .shaped well over fences. He was '■'Second to Survey in the Otautau “Steeplechase, when Kelly the Crow, 'Bally Brit, and Gay Boa were unplaced. Burwood won the Waiau '‘-.’Steeplechase at Riverton with 9.11 'lrom Royston (9.12) and Bally Brit 4(9.5 J), while Converse fell in the race. .- 'Then came a third (9.11) to Tangled .(11.5) and Arctic Star (10.5) in the ' Riverton Steeplechsae, in which Sun-

ward (9.10) and" Gay Boa were unplaced. Bally Brit (9.0) beat Burwood (10.0) by a length in the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase, with Gay Boa (9.1) third. Burwood meets Bally Brit on 61b better terms in the Tahuna

Steeplechase. Burwood seems entitled to preference over the others named above.

Quinopal may be better than his age suggests. Jollyanna has two placed performances. He was second to Scotsden in the Otago Hunt Club Steeplechase and also second to Eastern Chief at Clifden. Radius Rod is a possibility. Octane in his last 10 starts failed to gain a place, and the others have no public form to recommend them. Last season Kelly the Crow won the Pareora Steeplechase and the Christchurch Hunt Cup Steeplechase. He followed with a third, with 9.10, to Sunward (9.2) and Arctic Star (10.2> in the Enfield Steeples, and was third, with 9.11. to Tangled (10.10) and Sunward (10.1) in the Hunt Cup. He then appeared to train off, but if back to early form and promise would be dangerous. TRIAL HANDICAP Sixteen figure on the card for the Trial Handicap, but the chance of some is an unknown quantity. Cone Peak’s last placed performance was a second with 7.0 to Peony Rose (9.3) in the President’s Handicap at Riverton, with Great Pal (8.1) third, the unplaced lot including Valantua (8.2). Dissemble (8.8) Vola Dale (8.8), Flame Queen (7.9) Sheeny (7.7), and Gay Vixen (7.7) This form gives Cone Peak a fairly good chance. Sheeny’s third to Ardmayle and Great Bramble at Timaru shows improved form. Auctor has been placed four times out of nine starts, and is entitled to consideration. . Royal Ransom has been placed four times in moderate company, and his best form was probably a second to Scrap in' the Tria.l Handicap run at the last Dunedin winter meeting. Turaki has 11 unplaced performances. Invadere was third to Valantua and Sheeny at Atautau, and both Gold Don and Remembo have yet to face the starter. Gay Vixen was third to Foxlove and Astaire at Gore. Ramora and Palastyle have no form to recommend them, and the same remark applies to Hunting Chorus, Lord Hawke. Camerino, and Amoena. Triple Cone has been shaping well on the track at Invercargill, and may provide most danger to the three top-weights. OTAGO HURDLES The Surgeon, who figures at the top of the list in the Otago Hurdles, has been a busy horse this season, with 29 starts with three wins and 12 places to his credit. He won the Longbeach Hurdles with 10.4 from Courtyard (10.9) and Grampion (9.12),and Courtyard beat him twice at Timaru. Fireguard showed improvement at Timaru. and his stablemate. Black Duke, is one of the best-known horses in training. Superex was blocked by Haulbowline at Timaru when coming with a run from the final hurdle. The Surgeon now meets Fireguard on 91b, Superex on 71b, and Sunny Comet on 71b worse terms. Sunny Comet was third to Courtyard and The Surgeon on the second day of the meeting. McHeath made a winning debut over hurdles, and his best form on the flat makes him a rather better class than most of the opposition. Of those that follow McHeath, Sunny Comet may be the most dangerous. He won over hurdles at the Waimate and Timaru Hunt meetings held last season. BRIGHTON HANDICAP There is a good field of hacks engaged in the Brighton Handicap, and it reads a fairly open race, although Cintilla has been sorted out as the pick of the handicap. At the Dunedin winter meeting held last season Cintilla won the Provincial Handicap with 7.2 from Nightform 8.4 (winner of the Birthday Handicap with 7.8 J) and Royal Gallant 8.9. The unplaced lot were Milford (9.1), Island Linnet (8.2), Amy Johnson (7.11) and Daring Deed (7.8) Cintilla won in 2min 38 2-ssec, and High Glee (9.6) the next race in 2min 41scc. Cintilla thus looks well in at 51b above the minimum. This season Cintilla has started four times without gaining a place.

Barley Almond’s only win this season was in the Waipango Handicap at Riverton. She won with 8.8, just beating Ardmayle (7.6) and Flame Queen (7.6) in Imin 40 l-ssec. The unplaced lot included Thermidor (8.8), Coxcomb (8.4) and Soliad (8.3). Soliad has since won at Invercargill with 8.3 from Silkwood (7.13), Ardmayle (7.10), Barley Almond (9.2), Johnny (8.3) and others. Ardmayle subsequently won at Timaru with 7.6 from Great Bramble (7.9), Sheeny (7.0), Balmenter (7.7) and others. On Invercargill form and under a 141 b higher scale, Barley Almond meets Soliad on 111 b, Silkwood on 121 b and Ardmayle on 121 b better terms. Barley Almond should thus beat all those mentioned with her. Soliad appears to hold Silkwood safe at 31b after beating her at 41b, and she should also account for Ardmayle and Johnny. Clubman has won four times this season on the West Coast, including two races on the same day at Reefton. Rompalong’s form is a bit old, but in 1935 with 7.0 she ran second to Cuddle (9.6) in the Rlddiford Memorial at Masterton. Volo. Dale has been out of form, but Balmenter won at Waimate. Gillie is one of the most promising hacks at Riccarton, and won over a mile and a-quarter at Amberley, and on that form ’he and Settlement should account for Drink Up. Gillie beat Settlement by a head and now meets him on 4£lb worse terms. Baltruin may be best of those that follow. Figures point to Cintilla, who should start favourite if in form to take advantage of opportunity. OTAGO STEEPLECHASE There is only a small field engaged in the Otago Steeplechase, but it will provide a most interesting race if Signaller goes to the post. Signaller is also engaged in the Tahuna Steeplechase, but his owners may elect to take on the more sporting and, incidentally, the more difficult proposition attached to the Otago Steeplechase. The smaller field may involve less risk to a green ’chaser than the comparatively big field engaged in the Tahuna Steeplechase, in which the stable has another representative. Trisox is a tried and well-proved cross-country performer, and with ample experience behind him many will support his chance with considerable confidence. In fact. Trisox is entitled to start favourite. Still, new champions are always rising over the horizon of form, and as Signaller has been schooling well Trisox has a hard task to concede him 211 b. Signaller, prior to being put to hurdling, had some excellent winning and placed form on the flat. He has twice succeeded in the Otago Hurdles, and appears to stay well. Punchestown shaped well so long as his condition lasted in his race at Timaru, and may be considerably im-

extra furlong. Araboa won last year, and, judging by track work, is about ready to repeat form. Peony Rose won at Riverton with 9.3 in Imin 14 l-ssec and again at Invercargill with 7.2 in Imin 29sec, beating Rodeur (9.1) and Sea Fox (7.3), with Moneyless (7.13) unplaced. Under a 141 b higher scale, Rodeur meets Peony Rose on 131 b, Sea Fox on 111 b, and Moneyless on 111 b better terms. This seems to eliminate Sea Fox and Moneyless and give Rodeur a good chance of turning the tables on Peony Rose. Although the figures are against him, Sea Fox is fancied in some quarters. Mount Val has been out of form, but is a good “ mud ” horse, and Nightwings may prove to be worthy of note. Araboa will probably start favourite. ST. CLAIR HANDICAP A field of 21 colours on the card for the St. Clair Handicap, and some good hacks are engaged. These include Palmyra, Astaire, Dissemble, Thermidor, Straightdell, Waitoru, Flame Queen, Spanish Lad and others that have displayed promising form. Lord Nuffield may not be quite ready. Dissemble can go very fast, but her speed is balanced by 9.8. Astaire won well on both days at Timaru, and now meets Flame Queen on 91b worse terms for a neck beating. On the first day at Timaru Thermidor gave Astaire BJlb and ran him to a head, but the latter got a bad run and otherwise would have scored by a bigger margin. Waitoru came into favour on his win at Invercargill, and Spanish Lad is another that will be fancied. In such a big field the luck of the draw is an important consideration. At present Palmyra, Thermidor, Waitoru and Astaire read sure of support. THE FINAL GALLOPS Heavy rain overnight made the going heavy on the inside grass at Wingatui yesterday morning. A large number of horses worked, but they were mostly restricted to short sprints following easy exercise. Palmyra and Gillie covered six furlongs in Imin 19sec. Studley Royal pleased in a gallop over six furlongs in Imin 19 l-ssec, with the assistance of Settlement over five furlongs. Spanish Lad and \ Nlghtwings ran over half a mile in 51 l-ssec.

proved by the race and subsequent, track work. Black Banner won four times last season, and was also placed four times out of 11 starts. Such consistency must make him worthy of respect, but he has to give 131 b to Signaller. Sunward ran second at Timaru to Flashlight, who may be one of the coming champions over country. Amy Johnson has shaped well on the flat, but may have been put to the game a bit late in life. BIRTHDAY HANDICAP The time-honoured Birthday Handicap, with many notable names on its scroll of fame, has attracted a useful field of fairly well-performed horses. Mungatoon has made a somewhat sudden rise in the weights, mostly on account of his dual success at Timaru. He won the Timaru Cup with 7.5 by three lengths from Willie Win (9.0) and Studley Royal (8.0), and the unplaced lot included Wild Career (7.13), Last Refrain (7.8) and Royal Gallant (7.5), who all figure in the field for the Birthday Handicap. Mungatoon won in even more impressive style in the South Canterbury Handicap with 7.11 from Last Refrain (7.12), with Wild Career (7.12) and Royal Gallant (7.0) unplaced. Studley Royal 7.13 fell. At Wingatui Mungatoon meets Studley Royal on 111 b, Last Refrain on 91b. Wild Career on 111 b and Royal Gallant on 91b worse terms. He won so well that he earned considerable poundage and is at home on soft going. Last season Mungatoon could only achieve placed performances. In 1934 he won the Waikato Cup from nine others, and in 1935 won the Herries Memorial, run over 11 furlongs in 3min 20sec. He was also second in the Franklin Cup with 8.6, run in 2min 7 l-ssec, and last season put up some very creditable placed performances. This season Mungatoon won the Taumarunui Cup with 7.1 and covered 11 furlongs in 2min 21 3-ssec. He was second with 7.7 to Galleon (8.10) in the Oamaru Cup, when High Glee 8.1 was unplaced. Mungatoon was unplaced in his races at the Great Easter meeting and won twice on the West Coast, where Monipere beat him over a mile and a-quarter. and now meets him on 101 b better terms. Then came his two wins at Timaru. It is never wise to judge a horse on the worst form, and that may apply to Studley Royal. At the Riccarton meeting Studley Royal won the Sockburn Handicap with 7.5 J, with Last Refrain (7.123) and Mungatoon (7.1) unplaced. In the Great Autumn Handicap Studley Royal (7.4 J) was a head away from Arctic King, a very unlucky second after losing a lot of ground at the start. Wild Career (7.53) and Mungatoon (7.1) were unplaced). Studley Royal has considerable poundage on his best form, and it may be wise to discard his failures. Wild Career won the Riverton Cup. but has done a considerable amount of hurried travelling, which did not help him to repeat his best form. He won the Otautau Cup. and on Riverton Cup form meets High Glee on 41b and Amelita on 111 b worse terms. He galloped very well yesterday morning, and seemed to handle the going satisfactorily. High Glee won the Easter Handicap with 7.12 in 2min 6 l-ssec, and has since been doing well on the track. Monipere may prove to be the best of the light-weights, and Royal Gallant, who acts well in heavy going, won the Birthday Handicap of 1935 and 1936. Studley Royal may start favourite. WINTER HANDICAP Travenna acts well in heavy going, but he and Osculate may not be forward enough in condition. Rodeur is now up in the weights, and so is Moneyless, who has been galloping well in his track work. Linguist has been a failure in her recent races, and so has Trivet. Alby won at Marlborough, but has a long row of misses this season. Golden Chest was a bit unlucky at Timaru, where Lazybones beat her in the last stride. Rodeur was third, and now meets Golden Chest on 11b worse terms over an

Lazybones beat Donadea over five furlongs in Imin 4 2-ssec. Sheeny left half a mile behind in 54 2-ssec.

A large number sprinted over short distances without recording any great margin between their time. Golden Chest put up the best by going three furlongs in 38sec.

Over Jumps A hurdle race and a steeplechase are included in the Ashburton winter programme. Peerless

Peerless, who has been spelling at Nelson since the summer, when her form lapsed, is due to come in again next week to start on her three-year-old preparation.

A Bloodstock Sale A sale of bloodstock will be held on Monday morning at F. Shaw’s stables at Wingatui. At present Hunting Chorus, Barley Almond, and a two-year-old by Gascony will be amongst those going under the hammer. Remits

Two remits for the coming annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference seek to prohibit the future racing of horses blind in one eye in the Dominion. One is submitted by the Executive Committee and the other by the Wellington Racing Club.

A Good Suggestion

The Wellington Racing Club is submitting a remit to the annual meeting of the Racing Conference seeking to make it obligatory on owners to notify the conference when horses registered as entires are gelded. Retired

On returning to New York last month, Mrs Marion du Pont Scott said her horse, the Grand National winner, Battleship, was not to be raced again. He is to be retired to a stud in Virginia, where he did a season’s service before being sent to England in July, 1936.

Doctors on Training Tracks The question of having a doctor on courses on mornings when fast work and schooling are carried out was discussed by the Auckland branch of the Owners, Trainers, and Breeders’ Association. The matter came up as the result of an accident at Te Rapa, when R. E. Thomson was injured While schooling a horse. It was decided to send a remit to the conference, urging that a medical man, or a member of the St. John Ambulance, be in attendance three mornings a week when fast work is in progress. Mala‘for Doomben The New Zealand-bred Mala, who proved a sensation on his first visit to Australia, and was subsequently purchased by Mr Alan Cooper for 7000 guineas, is to be sent to Brisbane almost immediatey. It is expected he will contest the Doomben Newmarket and Cup, run on June 25 and July 2 respectively. Arrangements have been made for Mala to be trained at Sandgate. Teaching Them to Ride From time to time the Idea of a school »for apprentices has been mooted, but nothing practical has ever come from the discussions. A step forward will, however, be taken at the next annual conference if a proposal by the Executive Committee is carried. The executive proposes to add a new clause to the agreement of apprenticeship whereby the employer agrees to give the lad regular and proper tuition in the art of riding, with the primary object of enabling him to become proficient in races and to qualify for an apprentice jockey’s licence. Another Spearfelt Easily the best horse Vin O’Neil ever had in his stable was Spearfelt, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1926 from Naos and Pantheon, and the Australian Cup the following year from the same two horses. Spearfelt went to Queensland, where he made and continues to make, a name for himself as a sire. What more natural sequence than that O’Neill should acquire one of Spearfelt’s sons. He has one, and, in Rex Felt, he has a colt who may possibly emulate the deeds of his illustrious father. Rex Felt has raced only three times, but has won his last two starts, and has simply walked in. Rex Felt is particularly well bred. He is by Spearfelt out of Milleme Miss (half-sister to Sion), by Trillion from Galtee Queen, by Bobadil from Vibrate, by Wallace.

Prompt Decisions While it is only correct procedure for stewards to hear all evidence possible when a jockey is “ carpeted,” it is also just as important for the officials to come to prompt decisions. Delayed verdicts are worrying to jockeys, and trainers are put to no end of inconvenience. A jockey who rides in a race intervening while he is under a cross-fire examination for a breach of the rules, however slight (says a Sydney paper), cannot be expected to do his mount full justice. There is ever present a fear that he will be suspended or otherwise dealt with as soon as he returns to the room for the conclusion of evidence.

Cheap Insurance All employees of the A.J.C. —and they embrace jockeys, stable lads, and trainers —pay insurance, and the leading club is licensed to operate under the Workers’ Compensation Act. It must be the cheapest insurance in Australia. When a jockey is hurt on the track or during a race, his claims are based according to his earnings. ■ The last fatal hurdle schooling accident was met by an allowance of £BOO to the widow and £25 for each child of the unfortunate rider. The maximum claim is £IOOO. Widows of two jockeys recently killed in Adelaide were each paid £6OO. Steeplechasing

“Why do not some of you pressmen advocate a return of steeplechasing? ” was asked the other day. “ Since brush hurdle-racing was introduced here that branch of the racing game has gone ahead by leaps and bounds, and the same could be said of steeplechasing if the A.J.C. would construct brush fences instead of the stiff obstacles that were used previously." There is a good deal to be said in favour of what this trainer said (says “Musket”). With such fine jumpers as Euphorbus, Spearbine, Asolando, Crunatus, and Capaneus, just to mention a few of the more experienced horses, and some promising recruits in Paul Jones and Tuxedo, ste.eplechasing would again provide spectacular racing, the equal of what is seen in Melbourne and Adelaide. The A.J.C. has one of the finest steeplechase tracks in Australia, and it was a grand sight to see the contestants going over the hill at the back of the course; in fact, 1 it was the race that real horsemen enjoyed more than any other, for the simple reason that the field could be watched from start to finish, while accidents were no more numerous nor more serious than in hurdle races. It is true that just prior to the A.J.C. discontinuing these races the patronage was not very encouraging, but if brush fences were substituted for the ponderous jumps of the past, trainers of hurdlers are sanguine that the premier club would not regret reintroducing steeplechases. OTAKI-MAORI MEETING (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, June 3. Good fields have accepted for the opening of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's winter meeting to-morrow.
