TRAMCAR SHOOTS MAN
LIVE CARTRIDGE ON TRACK
As a 32-year-old Leicester man was walking home during the night a tramcar clanged past him near West Bridge. There was a loud report, and the man, Cyril Miller, fell to the pavement, shot in the thigh. The tram had exploded a live cartridge which was lying in the rail. Mr Miller was rushed to hospital, where the bullet, of service pattern, was extracted. He was then allowed to go home. Nobody knows whether the cartridge was deliberately placed on the rail, or whether it was dropped in the road accidentally. Inquiries were made at headquarters of three territorial units which are near West Bridge, but no soldier is allowed to take ammunition away.
