WORK OF COUNTRY WOMEN INTERESTING FEATURE OF SHOW A wonderful example of the skill and ingenuity possessed by country women is shown in the display of handwork by members of the Otago branches of the Women’s Institute, which is attracting much attention at the Winter Show. The display includes articles both useful and orna-mental-mats fashioned from the unravelled wool of old cardigans, gay smocks from flour-bags, ornaments from broken glass and papier mache, and last, but not least, a birdcage made from a kerosene tin and painted bright green. The winner of the first section, in which entries came forward from seven bays, was the Lawrence Institute, which also received the special needlework prize for a tea cloth beautifully worked in a daffodil design Outstanding exhibits in this bay were a papier mache doll, a lampshade made from a discarded stable lantern, and a marquetry bowl containing a plant which bore flowers made of tinted eggshells.
