LOW SCORING

GLOUCESTERSHIRE MATCH AUSTRALIA OUT FOR 164 SINFIELD’S FINE AVERAGE (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON. June 3. (Received June 4, at 1.30 a.m.) The weather was sunny when the match. Australia v. Gloucester, was resumed this morning. O’Reilly and Ward were dismissed by successive balls from Sinfield, and then Tyler finished off the Australian innings. Sinfield was applauded for the most outstanding figures against Australia so far on the tour Gloucester commenced the second innings at 11.55 on a tricky wicket. Wickets fell rapidly, Allen again being the only batsman not scared by the spin bowlers. He had a life when six, but hung on until 42 Finally he skied a ball from O’Reilly, and the catch was accepted by McCabe at forward square-leg. At the luncheon adjournment Gloucester had lost eight wickets for 96.

Previous Day’s Play Gloucestershire, on winning the toss yesterday, decided to bat, but wickets fell cheaply. , Allen was troubled by the spinndrs, and was nearly an hour in making 15 runs. Gloucester’s score at lunch was two for 61, but upon resumption the wicket was difficult, and O’Reilly reaped a harvest. He took five wickets for runs off four overs. After lunch eight Gloucester wickets fell in half an hour for 17 runs. The batsmen were so nervous that they scarcely attempted to play the ball. The wicket, which had been affected by rain, could not fully account for their pitiful display. Australia opened the first innings at 2.55. The batting of Brown and Badcock was dull, but Gloucester had nobody to exploit the vice in the wicket. After a correct and restrained hour’s batting Brown was caught at fine leg. "McCabe was beaten in playing a purely defensive stroke. Badcock and Hassett played defensively, waiting to score off loose balls. Upon their dismissal the wickets fell quickly, but Ward stonewalled while O’Reilly hit gallantly until stumps. Sinfield, a slow bowler, was very accurate, and worried all the batsmen, who were unable to penetrate his leg side field. TEST TRIAL MATCH HAMMOND BATS SOUNDLY LONDON, June 3. (Received June 4, at 1.30 a.m.) In fine weather and on a drying wicket, the first test trial was resumed at Lord’s this morning, At the luncheon adjournment England had lost seven wickets for 320 runs. Hammond, who was most cautious, completed his 1000 runs for the season. At the close of play yesterday the position was; The Rest. 298: England 204 for four wickets. The newspaper critics were surprised at the good score by the Rest. They do not think, however, that the side should have made so many runs, indicating that the English attack would not be good enough against Australia. Although Edrich and Hutton put on 113 for England’s first wicket, their batting was painfully slow. Details:—
