AMERICAN SPY TRIAL
WITNESS WHO FLED ARRIVAL AT HAMBURG CHERBOURG, June 2. The police did not to arrest Werner Gudenberg on his arrival on the liner at Hamburg. A ship’s officer announced that Gudenberg would be handed over to the Hamburg police. A message received on Monday stated: A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Dr Griebl on a charge of violating the drastic Espionage Statute, A warrant has also been issued on the same charge for the arrest of Wemer Gudenberg, who escaped surveillance and sailed for Hamburg on Thursday. The warrant for Gudenberg’s arrest will be served when the ship arrives at Cherbourg. He was formerly employed at a plant manufacturing secret Army and Navy planes. The New York Times says both men are trusted witnesses in aiding the Government in its efforts to smash the spy ring, but both fled, apparently under duress from hidden Nazi superiors giving orders from the homeland.
