BASES IN PACIFIC
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT - JAPAN’S SERIOUS VIEW TOKIO, June 2. A Naval Spokesman says that if Britain and the United States cooperate in developing air bases in the Phoenix and Ellice Groups, as reported, Japan would be gravely concerned owing to their proximity to her southern islands. There would be no objection to the use of the islands for civilian aircraft, although they would be easily convertible to military needs.
