COASTWISE MOVEMENTS Karu came out of dock yesterday morning and loaded at the Kitchener street wharf. She sailed late In the afternoon for .Nelson and New Plymouth, via ports. Walmarlno arrived yesterday from Auckland, via ports, and sailed attain last night for Bluff. She Is due back here on Sunday and Is to load on Tuesday for Wellington and Auckland, via ports. Walpahl Is to leave Gisborne to-morrow for Dunedin direct, and hi due here on Monday. She is to load out on Tuesday for Napier and Gisborne, via Oamaru, Tlmaru, Lyttelton and Wellington. Waiana Is to leave Auckland to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She Is due here next Thursday, and Is to sail the following day for Oamaru, Tlmaru and Lyttelton to continue loading for Wellington and Auckland. Holmdale Is expected here this morning and ts to sail this evening for Wellington, Plcton and Wanganui, via Oamaru. Tlmaru and Lyttelton. Port Waikato •Is now duo on Sunday from Auckland, via porta. She Is to load out, on Tuesday for Tlmaru, Lyttelton and Auckland. Mlro, from Auckland and Kalkonra, Is dne at Port Chalmers to-morrow to discharge a quantity of explosives. She Is then to come to Dunedin to load on Tuesday for Auckland direct. TANKER BRAMORA The Norwegian motor tanker Bramora arrived bar® yesterday to complete discharge of her eargo of petrol for the Texas Oil Company. She is to sail at 7 a.m. to-day for San Pedro. MATAROA DUE ON MONDAY Dalgety and Co. advise that the Shaw Savill vessel Mataroa, loading Homeward, Is to leave Auckland at 8 o'clock to-night for Port Chalmers direct, where she Is duo on Monday morning. She Is expected to sail about Friday next ’ for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete. TEKOA LOADING The Tekoa Is to sail to-night for Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland to complete Homeward loading; CITY OF MOBILE Having completed discharge of her New York eargo, the City of Mobile Is to sail at daylight to-day for Sydney to commence loading. REMUERA REPORTS Kn route from London, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Remuera has reported. that she will reach Auckland at noon on Monday. LONDON SHIPPING During the week ended May 6, 1071 vessels, representing 1,000,732 net register tons, used the Port London. Of these 558 vessels (908,187 net register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports, and 513 vessels (182,245 nut register tons) were engaged In coastwise traffic. The arrivals Included seven meat cargoes—five from Australia and two from South America, comprising 1)7,000 carcasses of lamb and mutton, 105,000 quarters of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits and sundries. Forty-six vessels, totalling 499,138 gross register tons, used the Tilbury landing stage during the •tenth of April.

RUAHINE AT PANAMA The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Ruahine, which left Wellipgton on May 9. arrived at Panama on May 31. She Is due at London on June 18. MILLWALL DOCKS Seventy years ago, on March 14, 1868, Millwall Docks were publicly opened. The docks are situated between the West India Docks and the Thames, In the Isle of Dogs, and derive their name from the fact that numerous windmills used to line the embankment or river wall, on the north side of the Thames along Llnichoiisc Reach, In the days when the Isle of Dogs was pasture land, says The P.L.A. Monthly, In an article commemorating the official Since the first ship entered the docks In 1868 many changes have taken place. The Port of London Authority has from time to time carried out schemes to keep the accommodation and dock equipment up to modern standards, and Important works have recently been completed, or arc still under way. During the latter half of 1937 big new timber storage sheds, covering several acres, were erected by Timber Wharves, Ltd., on the south side of the Outer Dock. The East Quay, Millwall Inner Dock, Is now In process of widening, and a double-storey warehouse Is being built alongside. The Millwall Docks are to-day used by shipping lines trading with the Persian Gulf, West Africa, Sweden, Russia, the Baltic and other Continental ports, grain, woodware and paper cargoes being predominant. FISHERIES RESEARCH SHIP The new fisheries research vessel Warreen, which was launched recently at Wllllamstown, left on May 9 for a six weeks’ cruise in Bass Strait and Tasmanian waters. The Warreen Is the most elaborately equipped ship of her type In the world. Her main propelling machinery consists of a 215-horse power Diesel engine, which gives her a speed of more than nine knots. A fully equipped laboratory has been built on board for the use of the scientists who will accompany the vessel on her cruise. A special electric depth-finding InstrurnentShas been installed aboard the vessel to inform fishermen and scientists of the presence beneath the ship of shoals of fish. The method has been used successfully for some time by Norwegian fishermen. It is hoped that the investigations will lead to the establishment of a profitable deep sea fisheries Industry on a large scale In Australia. Special Interest will be taken in the tuna off the Australian coast. The canning of tuna Is one of the chief Industries of California, which enjoys a practical monopoly of an cverIncreaslng world market. Many visitors from the United States have expressed surprise that the abundance of these fish In Australian waters has not been exploited. The Warreen will remain at sea for six weeks before making for Sydney. Then she will proceed to Cronulla, which Is to be her base.
